The Acapulco Square was designed to be worked in two or more colors for maximum customization. The simple stitches and design look quite different depending upon number of colors used and I think that’s the fun of it! The design is worked in single and double crochets and easy enough for a beginner to give it a try!
I designed the Acapulco Crochet Squares in Red Heart With Love yarn but you can choose from almost any yarn, just be sure to adjust the hook for the weight you are using and remember the finished size will differ too.
As with all of my crochet squares, the Acapulco Crochet Square can be used in lots of different projects — join two for a pretty throw pillow, create sides and base and join two for a tote bag, you could even fashion these into a garment with a little creativity!
The Acapulco Square is a nice coordinating square to my Copenhagen, Sintra, Barcelona, Casablanca and Monty Carlo Squares too.

- Join rounds with a slip stitch in the back loop of the first stitch of round unless otherwise noted.
- Each round starts in the next stitch after the join, unless otherwise noted.
- The last stitch of the round is made in the join of the previous round.
- All single crochets are worked in the back loop only.
- All double crochets are worked in the front loop of the stitch two rows below. Be sure to leave stitches behind double crochets unworked.
Color Changes:
- I wrote this pattern to be worked in 2 or more colors, but of course, you may use as many or as few colors as you like. Use the main color for all odd numbered rounds (the ones with the double crochets).
- In this pattern, color changes are made in the join stitch. Join the new color as you slip stitch to join the round
- I fasten off at each contrasting color change and work the main color over the ends to avoid having to weave so many ends.
