The Barcelona Square is a pretty square that takes on a different look when worked in 1, 2 or 3 colors. Work this square in 1 color, and it’s all about the texture; work it in 2 and watch the center motif pop up or use 3 colors for a color blocked, bold look!
I designed these crochet squares in Caron Simply Soft or Red Heart Soft yarn but you can choose from almost any yarn, just be sure to adjust the hook for the weight you are using and remember the finished size will differ too.
As with all of my crochet squares, the Barcelona Crochet Square can be used in lots of different projects — join two for a pretty throw pillow, create sides and base and join two for a tote bag, you could even fashion these into a garment with a little creativity!
The Barcelona Square is a nice coordinating square to my Casablanca and Monty Carlo Squares too.
I used the Chetnanigans BlocksAll Board to block my squares and I love this tool! You can read my review HERE!

VSt (V Stitch): (dc, ch1, dc) in same stitch or space.
Notes:
- Pattern written in US Standard terms.
- The ch1 at the beginning of a round DOES NOT count as a stitch.
- The stitch count is in ( ) at end of each round.
- Repeat instructions within [ ], * or ** as indicated.
- When a number precedes a stitch, work that number of stitches in the next stitch, example 3dc means work 3 double crochets in the next stitch.
- When a number follows a stitch, work that stitch in the designated number of stitches, example dc 3 means work a dc in each of the next 3 stitches.
- I wrote this pattern to be worked in 3 colors, but of course, you may use as many or as few colors as you like.
Starting a Round:
- Join rounds with slip stitch to first stitch of round.
- Start each round in the same stitch as the join.
- The beginning ch3 counts as a BPdc unless otherwise noted.
Color Changes:
- I designed this Barcelona square in three different options, 1 color, 2 colors, 3 colors. Please pay attention to instructions for the color changes for the square you are making (pick only one from the list below)
- For 1 color square, simply make the entire square in your color of choice.
- For 2 color square, the contrasting color is worked to allow the raised stitches to pop out and the background color recede. To complete this look, work the entire square in the main color except the stitches that are highlighted in “red” within the pattern instructions which are worked in the contrasting color. For this square you will work over the yarn not in use and pick it up as needed.
- For 3 color square, I’ve provided the color changes next to the round number.
- In this pattern, color changes are made in the last pull-through of the stitch before the new color starts. Work stitches as usual until you have 2 loops on your hook, in the last stitch before the color change. Wrap the new color around the end of the hook, then finish the stitch with the new color.
- Use the same color until a color change is noted.
Use Hook H/5.0 mm
- For 3 color square follow color changes in round number.
- For 2 color square make entire square in main color and change to contrasting color for stitches highlighted in red – ignore color changes next to round number.

It’s fair to say the pattern is as beautiful as it advanced. I got hopelessly lost around R8. There seems to be a mistake in marking colour change in this row. But more importantly – is it correct that majority of work is done on wrong side? My work tends to curl, like a frill. I’m afraid that’s not correct, too. Could you please advise?
Yes, I would say this is an intermediate pattern, but if taken slowly, I think it can be achieved by most. I’m not sure what you mean regarding working from the wrong side, the square is worked with the right side facing you however, some stitches are worked in back loops. I’m not sure about the curling you are experiencing, I’d say it might have something to do with tension. I would wait a round or two before deciding though, because as the design pops forward, often it smooths out the recessed stitches.
I hope that helps.
On the Barcelona crochet square can u please tell me how much yarn it takes to do the blanket and how much u used for each color
I did not make an entire blanket, just one square. I did not track the yardage for each color as I made multiple version of each square.
