Baby blankets are cute, but sometimes a soft, cozy cocoon is just what baby wants! This one is generously sized at approximately 18” long x 24” in circumference. I added a drawstring at the top, but you could leave it out if you prefer. The hat is a simple beanie just perfect to keep little heads warm. Just slip the hat on, and the cocoon over baby’s torso and you are ready to go!
I made this beauty with Red Heart Bunches of Hugs in three colors. The center is a “print” called Castle and the border is worked in Banana and Rain. The yarn is a #4 worsted weight, soft acrylic and quite pleasant to work with. It iscurrently available in 18 colors in a big ball size which is perfect for larger projects. In fact, for my sample I used about 1 1/4 balls of the print and about 1/4 of each of the other two colors. I plan on making other items with the leftovers, but if you don’t have a need for the extra, you could mix with another similar weight yarn such as Red Heart Baby Hugs Medium or even Red Heart Super Saver.

Thank you to Red Heart for providing the yarn for this project!

Cocoon –18” long x 24” circumference
The cocoon is worked from bottom up.
Round 1: With Color 1, ch47, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch until one remains, 3dc in last ch; working along opposite side of beginning chain, dc in each st to end being sure to work one dc in the same ch as the first dc, join. (90 dc)
Note: If you want to adjust the width add/decrease the beginning chain in increments of 3 chains.
Round 2: Ch1, turn, [Shell, skip 2] repeat between [ ] to end, join. (30 Shells)
Rounds 3 to 38: Repeat Round 2.
Note: If you want to adjust the length add/decrease repeat rows ad needed.
Round 39: Join Color 2, ch1, sc in each st to end, join. (90 sc)
Rounds 40 to 43: Ch1, sc in each st to end, join. (90 sc)
Round 44: Working from wrong side, join Color 3, [sl st in next st, hdc in next st] repeat between [ ] to end, join. (90)
Rounds 45 to 48: Ch1, turn, [sl st in next st, hdc in next st] repeat between [ ] to end, join. (90)
Drawstring: Cut two pieces of yarn each 4 yards long. Tie two colors together on each end. Have someone hold one end, while you hold the other end so that the yarn is stretched taught. Twist your end to one side until a tight rope develops (you twist a lot!). When the rope is wrapped tightly, grab the center of the rope and bring the two ends together.
Let go of the center section and allow the rope to twist on itself, creating a neat evenly wound thicker roping (you may have to coax it a bit to smooth out any kinks). Tie a decorative knot at each end, leaving about 1.5” beyond the knot to form a tassel. Trim ends evenly.
Weave drawstring in and out of stitches in Round 44.
Hat
The hat is worked from top down. Join rounds with sl st to first st of round.
Round 1: With Color 2, ch4, join with sl st in first ch to form a circle, ch3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in center of circle, join. (12 dc)
Round 2 (mark this round as a right side round): Ch1, [sc, dc] in each st to end, join. (24)
Round 3: Ch1, turn, *[sc, dc] in next two sts, skip 1*; repeat between * to end, join. (32)
Round 4: Ch1, turn, [Shell, skip 1] repeat between [ ] to end, join. (16 Shells)
Rounds 5 to 8: Ch1, turn, [Shell, skip 2] repeat between [ ] to end, join. (16 Shells)
Rounds 9 and 10: Ch1, sc in each st to end, join. (48)
Round 11: Join Color 3, ch1, [sl st in next st, hdc in next st] repeat between [ ] to end, join. (48)
Rounds 12 to 14: Ch1, turn, [sl st in next st, hdc in next st] repeat between [ ] to end, join. (48)
Fasten off after last repeat.
Bow – see video here: https://wp.me/p4VX0z-4bO

I seem to be missing how u attached the drawstring. Thxl
Weave it in and out of the stitches in Round 44.
Just finished the lemonadecocoon and hat set in blue shades. Turned out nicely. I noticed in the hat that you were to have 16 sheels which was correct, but then rows 9-14 said 32 stitches. Would that not be 48 as each shell has 3 stitches? Mine was 48 and looks correct.
You are correct, thanks for letting me know, I’ve updated the pattern.
