I made this Pillow Soft Throw with Red Heart Dreamy Yarn Soft
Click HERE to read my yarn review and see other projects made with Dreamy!
I named this “Pillow Soft” Throw because of how soft and cushy it is with the combination of the yarn and stitch. It reminds me of resting your head on a fluffy, soft bed pillow!
This throw has a beautiful, almost woven look texture, easily achieved by using the bean stitch. I kept the border rather simple to not detract from the main show, but I carried the woven look theme throughout. I designed this throw in stripes of varying widths using three colors, but it is meant to be customized to your taste so use as many or as few as you like (hint: use one color only to really showcase the texture).
The main body: The bean stitch may be new to some of you, but don’t fret, its nothing more than a very simple “puff” stitch and the main body of the throw is a one row repeat, so it’s the perfect project to take on the go! Once you master the feel of the bean stitch, you will be surprised at how quickly this throw works up. I made my sample approximately 40″ x 45″ which is a generous size for a baby blanket or great for a lap blanket, but it’s very easy to size. The stitch multiple is 2, which means all you need to do is add or reduce the beginning chain in increments of 2.
The border: The border is really a very simple repeat of single crochet and chain stitches, however, I did do something a little interesting for the final edge. I love the crab stitch/twisted single crochet as a simple border. I just find that it’s a nice simple, unisex finish that still has a bit of pizzaz, don’t you agree? For this throw, I decided to modify the crab/twisted single crochet slightly, by adding a chain and skipping one between stitches – I love how it turned out!
Instructions
Size: Approximately 40” x 45” – Size is easily adjustable.
Materials:
Red Heart Dreamy Bulky Weight yarn, 466 yards per skein
- Color 1 (Ivory) 2 skeins
- Color 2 (Grey) 1 skein
- Color 3 (Aqua) 1 skein
Gauge: Not critical for this project, but I got approximately 4 Bean Sts x 7 Rows = 3”
Stitch Multiple = 2
Abbreviations (US Terms):
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
sl st: slip stitch
st(s): stitch(es)
Special Stitches:
st = Bean Stitch: Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over (YO) and pull loop through (2 loops on hook), YO insert hook in same stitch and pull loop through (4 loops on hook), YO insert hook in same stitch and pull loop through (6 loops on hook), YO pull through all 6 loops, chain 1 to close stitch.
Twisted Single Crochet or Crab Stitch: You may use either Twisted Single Crochet or Crab Stitch as their final appearance is the same. To complete a Crab Stitch, simply work single crochet in each stitch in the opposite of your regular crochet direction. That means if you are a righty and normally crochet right to left, work crab stitch from left to right.
I have a video tutorial for Twisted Single Crochet at: http://bit.ly/2bfp53y
Notes:
- Written in US Standard terms.
- Beginning ch1 does not counts as a stitch. Chains within a row/round DO count as stitch.
- Fasten off at each color change.
- Repeat instructions between [ ] as indicated.
- Stitch count is in ( ) at the end of the Row/Round.
- Weave ends as you work.
Pattern Instructions
Blanket
This blanket is designed for customization and you can easily change the size by increasing or decreasing the beginning chain in increment of 2 and adding/reducing rows to adjust the length. You may alternate colors in any way you wish to form a striped pattern, however, if you would like to duplicate my stripes, the colors break down as follows:
Rows 1 & 2 Color 2
Rows 3 to 6 Color 3
Rows 7 to 14 Color 1
Rows 15 to 18 Color 3
Rows 19 & 20 Color 2
Rows 21 to 28 Color 1
Rows 29 & 30 Color 3
Rows 31 to 34 Color 2
Rows 35 to 42 Color 1
Rows 43 to 46 Color 2
Rows 47 & 48 Color 3
Rows 49 to 56 Color 1
Rows 57 to 76 Repeat Rows 1 to 20
Blanket:
Row 1: Ch88, in 2nd ch from hook, work BSt, [skip 1, BSt in next st], repeat to end (ending with a BSt). (44 Bean Stitches throughout)
Row 2: Ch1, turn, skip the ch that closes the BSt, BSt in next st (this is the one that was formed when you pulled through all the loops on the hook in the BSt); continue to work a BSt in each BSt to end.
Rows 2 to 76: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off.
Border:
Round 1: Note: 3sc worked in last stitch of a row forms corner. In subsequent rounds the “corner stitch” is the center stitch of this group of 3. Join Color 1 in first st along short side of blanket, ch1, *3sc in corner, skip next st, sc in each st until there is 1 left, 3sc in last st; working down side of blanket, work 3sc every 2 rows to last st *, repeat between * to end. Join with sl st to first st of round. (87 sc on each short side + 113 on each long side + 4 corner sts)
Round 2: Sl st into corner stitch, ch1, *3sc in corner, sc in each st to next corner*; repeat between * to end, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off. (89 sc on each short side + 115 on each long side + 4 corner sts)
Round 3: Join Color 3 in any corner stitch, ch1, *3sc in corner stitch, ch1, skip 1, [sc in next st, ch1, skip 1], repeat between [ ] to next corner*; repeat between * to end, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off. (91 sc on each short side + 117 on each long side + 4 corner sts)
Round 4: Join Color 1, in any corner stitch, ch1, *3sc in corner stitch, ch1, skip 1, [sc in next ch space, ch1, skip 1], repeat between [ ] to next corner*; repeat between * to end, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off. (93 sc on each short side + 119 on each long side + 4 corner sts)
Round 5: Join Color 2, in any corner stitch, ch1, *3sc in corner stitch, ch1, skip 1, [sc in next ch space, ch1, skip 1], repeat between [ ] to next corner*; repeat between * to end, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off. (95 sc on each short side + 121 on each long side + 4 corner sts)
Round 6: Join Color 1, in any corner stitch, ch1, *3sc in corner stitch, ch1, skip 1, [sc in next ch space, ch1, skip 1], repeat between [ ] to next corner*; repeat between * to end, join with sl st to first st. (97 sc on each short side + 123 on each long side + 4 corner sts)
Round 7: Sl st into corner stitch, ch1, *3sc in corner, sc in each st to next corner (ch1 spaces count as st)*; repeat between * to end, join with sl st to first st. (100 sc on each short side + 126 on each long side + 4 corner sts)
Twisted Sc or Crab Stitch Border: To complete two color border you will work this in two steps. The first step is a round of the stitch (crab or twisted sc) in every other stitch with the first color; the second step is to fill in the skipped sts with a round in the second color.
Step 1: Continuing with Color 2, ch1, work a sc in corner st, *ch1, skip 1, Twisted sc or crab st in next st*, repeat between * all around blanket to end, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off.
Step 2: Join Color 3 in any skipped st, ch1, work sc in same st, *ch1, skip next sc, twisted sc or crab st in next st *, repeat between * all around blanket to end, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off.

I am about to start the borders and I’ve never done borders and I’m very confused! Do you have a video? What does work 3sc every two rows mean?
I do not have a video at this time. If you are referring to the note that states to work 3sc in each corner, that means to work 3 sc in each corner stitch to form the turn and continue down the next side.
Love the look of this pattern. I want to make this for my grown son who is 5’9 and weighs 240. How much yarn should I purchase to make a blanket in the yarn you used.
That’s nice of you to do for your son! I would make the blanket 1 1/2 times the size it is now, so you would need about 750 yards.
Just I love this pattern.. Thank you….
Thank you!
I’m confused when I get to Round 3 of the Border. If I sc, ch1, sk1 and repeat across, how can I have 91 sc on the short side? I’m only doing half as many as the previous row.
Hi there, as noted at the beginning of the pattern, the chains within the round count as a stitch, so you are simply increasing in each corner. Hope that helps.
I was wondering if you can tell me where to go to see how to do the Bean stitch and the Crab stitch as I am not familiar with these, Thanks!
Hi there. You can find several videos on YouTube for both these stitches. Just do a quick search and see which style of video appeals to you.
I’m looking forward to making this but have a question about the yarn used. You used red heart dreamy which is classified in their site as a 5 weight (bulky) yet you wrote it as a worsted weight which is a 4. Would it the results be the same if a 4 was used s opposed to a 5?
You are correct! I had a typo on the website. This blanket is made in the #5 weight bulky yarn. Thank you for letting me know 🙂
Thank you for this pattern! It’s simply gorgeous!
Question: I love Red Heart Dreamy, but what is the total yarn you used on this pattern? Red heart posts the following yardages for this yarn. I like the stripes, but don’t know how many skeins I should purchase.
Solids: 8.8oz (250g) 466yd
?Stripes: 6.3oz (180g) 355yd
Again, thanks for sharing your talent 🙂
Mary Ann
Hi Mary Ann, The number of skeins is listed in the pattern instructions. I’ve copied it here for your convenience:
Color 1 (Ivory) 2 skeins
Color 2 (Grey) 1 skein
Color 3 (Aqua) 1 skein
Thank you for this pattern. I did it in Caron One pound with a size 7 hook and it came out beautifully! Definitely one of my favorite projects.
Thank you!
I can’t wait to get started on this blanket!!! It’s one of the most appealing blankets I’ve seen in quite awhile!
Couple of questions about yarn choices…
1. Is Red Heart Dreamy a bit fuzzy? Your blanket doesn’t look fuzzy at all but the pics of the yarn itself looks to be somewhat fuzzy. I’m making a baby blanket and don’t want to risk getting yarn fuzz in baby’s eyes/mouth or have the blanket look too “worn” after being used for a while.
2. Color 1 requires 2 skeins. Do you use most of the 2nd skein? (I’m on a fairly tight budget and am in that lovely conundrum of quality vs cost). Do you have a yarn substitute you could recommend if I need to find a more affordable yarn? (I’ve looked around but the yardage needed typically puts me at the same price point regardless of what yarn I use.)
Thanks so much for any help you can provide!!
I’m glad you are excited! Yes, the yarn is a little fuzzy. I have not found that the fuzz detaches, but I’m not sure what might happen with prolonged use. Yes, I used the majority of the second skein of the ivory. As for substitute yarns, you could check yarnsub.com and see if something might come up there, however, I find that Red Heart typically is a great value. You could keep an eye out for their online sales (they just had a fantastic one right before Christmas) or you could try to find coupons for local craft stores such as Michaels.
Hi there! I love this blanket and I am now about to start the boarder, But I am very confused. How are you getting those stitch counts if you’re SC into each stitch? I only have about 39 rows of my blanket, where do the extra stitches come from? Am I meant to SC into the middle of puff stitches? Please help!
-Amy
The pattern calls for 76 rows. The instructions indicate to work 3sc every 2 rows, so that’s where the numbers come from. The important thing is to end up with the required number of stitches in the border round to be able to build upon that for the subsequent rounds.
Hope this helps 🙂
Perfect! Thank you! My last question is for the very last round of the border. How do we get color 2 into the twisted single crochet? I see that we continue with color 1, then switch to color 3, but how did you get color 2 in there? Ah, so close to finishing your beautiful pattern! Thanks for your help in advance!
-A
Ahh, that’s a typo, it should be Color 2 instead of Color 1 🙂
Absolutely loved how this baby blanket turned out. Thanks for the pattern! I “pinned” it!
Thank YOU!
