I’ve been working on this Hygge Hugs Throw for a while, but kept finding reasons to put it down. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I’ve been feeling all lovey and soft and figured this was the perfect time to finish this cozy beauty and share it with you all!
If you don’t know by now, “hygge” is a Danish/Norwegian word that describes a mood or feeling of coziness and comfort, with feelings of wellness and contentment. With that in mind, Hygge Hugs Throw seemed the perfect name for this blanket. The soft, fuzzy yarn, combined with a very simple one row repeat, make for a nice drape and squishy feel and it has that always popular “knit” look too!
I love throws with fringe but if you are like me, you just want to start using your project as soon as your are done crocheting, you don’t want to spend a bunch of time adding fringe at the end. The Hygge Hugs Throw solves that problem because the fringe is added as you crochet! That’s right, you will add the fringe at the beginning and end of each row, so that when you are done, you are DONE!
I love to design patterns that are basic guidelines and can be customized in many ways, I call them “recipes”. This allows each crocheter to customize to their own needs and tastes. This particular blanket has a lot of opportunity for customization. The texture is strong enough to make it shine in a solid color or choose several colors for endless stripes and combinations. You can adjust the size of the throw, the length of the fringe or not add fringe at all and of course you could use different yarns for different looks.
I made my sample as a small receiving blanket or perfect stroller size, but this pattern can easily be adjusted to just about any size! You can find my blanket sizing chart HERE if you need help with sizing.
Sizing is easy, simply adjust the beginning chain to the length you wish and work as many rows as you like to achieve the width!

I made this beauty with Red Heart Hygge Yarn in the color Powder. This yarn is a #5 bulky weight, in a 70% acrylic/30% nylon blend available in more that 20 beautiful colors. The yarn is twisted with a fur end which results in a super soft, drapey, and cozy yarn, perfect to snuggle up in.
If you prefer a smoother yarn you could try Bernat Velvet Yarn or even Bernat Softee Baby Chunky Yarn. Really you could use almost any yarn you like, just be sure to use a hook that is appropriate for your yarn.
Thank you to Yarnspirations for providing the yarn for this project!
I hope you’ll give this pattern a try. Let me know how you like it and be sure to share your finished photos on my Facebook page or tag me on Instagram @patternparadise!

- To adjust length, add chains to the beginning chain.
- To add width, Repeat Row 3 in increments of 2.
- To make the fringe longer, simply add chains at the beginning and end of each row and don’t forget to adjust Row 1 for the additional chains as well.
