Need a quick and simple stocking? No worries, the Super Simple Stocking can be worked up in about an hour and it’s cushy and bright and perfect to adorn those beautifully decorated mantles!
I used a variation on the single crochet for this stocking, which gives it a slightly different texture that I like very much, but if you prefer you can use regular single crochet. Most of the stocking is worked in a spiral so you don’t need to worry about joins or seams either….I told you it’s a super simple stocking!
Really, this is more of a recipe than a pattern. I love that because you can apply the principles to your own materials and create a unique project.
Thank you to Yarnspirations for providing the yarn for this sample. I used blanket yarn for this one because it is cushy, warm and comforting and because it’s a super bulky yarn the project is super quick to complete. Really, you could adapt this design to other yarns too. Frankly, you could even use multiple strands of worsted weight yarn held together if you are trying to reduce your stash a bit.
This is the last pattern release for this year, so I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a blessed and happy holiday season and may the new year bring you joy! Thank you for your support throughout the year and I’ll be back next year with more fun to share!
Size: 6” x 14”

- Ribbon for bow (optional)

Gauge: Gauge is not critical for this pattern, however, I got 10sc x 10 rows = 6” in the #6 weight yarn
Abbreviations (US Terms):
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
sl st: slip stitch
st(s): stitch(es)
tog: together
Special Stitch:
Msc: Modified single crochet – insert hook in designated stitch, DO NOT YARN OVER, instead with hook facing down and yarn below it, pull up a strand of yarn, yarn over and pull up a loop through the two loops on the hook.
- Work in a spiral (do no join rounds); to keep track of rounds, place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it as you complete rounds.
- The entire stocking except the last 3 rounds and the heel are worked in a modified single crochet which gives a nice textured appearance, however, if you prefer, you may substitute a regular single crochet.
- If you would like to adjust the size of your stocking, See Sizing Notes, in red throughout the pattern.
Super Simple Stocking Instructions:
Stocking
Round 1: Ch2, make 8 sc in first ch – DO NOT JOIN. (8 stitches)
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each st. (16 stitches)
Round 3: [2 Msc in next st, Msc in next st] repeat to end. (24 stitches)
Sizing Note: To make the stocking bigger, simply add more repeat rounds. For example the next round would be [2 Msc in next st, Msc in the next 2 sts] if you still want it bigger the next round would change the 2 to a 3 and so forth. Make the increases until you are satisfied with the width.
Round 4: Msc in each st to end. (24 stitches for remainder of stocking)
Rounds 5 to 13: Msc in each st to end.
Sizing Note: If you’ve adjusted the width, you will likely want to adjust the length of the foot as well.
Round 14: Msc 12, ch12, skip 12. (This will leave an opening that will become the heel)
Sizing Note: If you’ve made sizing changes, work half the number of stitches you have as Msc and the other half as chs.
Round 15: Msc in next 12 Msc and next 12 chs.
Round 16: Msc in each st to end.
Rounds 17 to 26: Repeat Round 16.
Sizing Note: If you’ve adjusted the width, you will likely want to adjust the length of the leg as well.
Round 27: Msc in each st to end, sl st in next st. Fasten off.
Round 28: Join with sl st in center back, ch1, sc in each st to end, join with sl st to first st.
Round 29: Ch 10 (or more if you want a longer hanging cord), sc in same st, sc in each st to end, join to first sc of round.
Round 30: Working loosely, sl st in each st all around the top of the stocking, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off.
Heel
Round 1: Join yarn in center bottom of heel, ch1, *sc in each st until there is one remaining before corner, sc2tog using the last st before corner and the first st after the corner, place a stitch marker in this stitch*, repeat between * once, sc in each st to end, join.
Please note the photo above is worked in a different stitch and intended to indicate the location of stitches to be worked in only.
From here forward, the stitch with the stitch marker is considered the corner.
Round 2: Ch1, *sc in each st until there is one remaining before corner, sc2tog using the last st before corner and the first st after the corner, move stitch marker into this stitch*, repeat between * once, sc in each st to end, join.
Repeat Round 2 until 4 sts remain. Fasten off leaving a long tail.
Turn stocking inside out, with the remaining tail, whip stitch the small opening at the heel.
