Welcome to Week 1!
Welcome to the first pattern of this year’s #12WeeksChristmasCAL! I’m happy to start us off with the Yuletide Christmas stocking and A Crocheted Simplicity will be ending the series with another stocking pattern — we call them bookend stockings! Between the two stockings we have lots of fun projects for you so I hope you will check back here each week!

The Yuletide Stocking is available in two sizes. It is a basic stocking pattern that is worked from the cuff down to the toe. You will work the cuff, start the body of the stocking, integrate the heel and then continue with the foot of the stocking and finally the toe. I’ve added lots of photos and a couple of tutorials to help you understand the process along the way, but remember, we have an EVENT in the Crochet Playground FP Group to help you if you have questions or just want to share your progress along the way and hang out with some like-minded crochet friends!
I used a bean stitch for this stocking. I love the texture and the little clusters look like interlocking slanted bubbles to me. I added the stocking hanger on the inside to keep the “knit look” cuff unobstructed, but you could add it to the top of the cuff if you prefer. I love pompoms, so of course I added this option too! This stitch is pretty solid and should keep the contents of the stocking in place, however, you can always line the stocking if you like.
Thank you to our sponsor Red Heart Yarns, for providing the yarn for this project. I used Red Heart With Love Metallic yarn in Teal and White or Red and White for the two samples, but you can choose from eleven beautiful colors or from any other Red Heart worsted yarn. This yarn is enjoyable to work with and produces a thick fabric with a bit of shimmer. It is an easy care #4 worsted yarn – I liked it!

The stocking is available in two sizes and worked from the top down. The cuff is worked in rows, then joined to form a ring. The body of the stocking is attached to the cuff and worked toward the toe, in rounds. The heel is worked in rows and integrated within the rounds.
Stockings in general have several techniques that are considered advanced beginner or intermediate and this stocking in particular because of the Bean Stitches can be a little tricky, especially around the heel. However, I’ve provided photos and “tips” to help even beginners succeed! I also have a full tutorial for the Cozy Cottage Stocking HERE and I think it may be useful in understanding the anatomy of a stocking.
If you like, you can add a purchased pompom or make your own, here’s an easy tutorial to help you make your own: Large Pompom Tutorial
The majority of the stocking is worked in Bean Stitch. I like this stitch because it has a fun texture. When working this stitch, you will work your Bean Stitches in the first loop of the Bean St from previous round, NOT the stitch created by the ch1 to close the Bean Stitch.
Cuff – Worked in Color 1
Tip: Do not work slip stitches too tightly.
Row 1 (Right Side Row): Ch13 (19), working in back bump of chain, hdc in 3rd ch from hook (skipped chs count as hdc) and each remaining ch to end. (12, 18)
Rows 2 to 4: Ch1, turn, working in BLO, sl st in each st to end. (12, 18)
Row 5 (Right Side Round): Ch2 (counts as hdc here and throughout), turn, working in BLO, hdc in each st to end. (12, 18)
Rows 6 to 8: Ch1, turn, working in BLO, sl st in each st to end. (12, 18)
Rows 9 to 40 (52): Repeat Rows 5 to 8.
Join: Bring the right sides together and match the stitches on the short ends, working in the free loop of the side closest to you and the back loop of the side furthest away from you, sl st through each st to join the cuff into a circle.
Edge Row 1: From right side of the cuff, turn to work along the bottom edge of cuff, ch1, sc 36 (48) worked evenly around, join with sl st to first st. (36, 48)
Edge Row 2: Ch1, sc in each st to end, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off. (36, 48)
Stocking – Worked in Color 2
- Join each round with sl st to beginning stitch of round.
- The body of the stocking is worked in rounds, but turned after each join in order to maintain the texture of the pattern.
- Photos shown are for smaller stocking, but concepts apply to both sizes.
Round 1: Join Color 2, ch1, sc in each st to end, join. (36, 48 throughout body of stocking)
Round 2: Ch1, *[BSt in next st, skip 1] repeat between [ ] to end, join. Tip: Place SM1 in first loop of first BSt to make it easier to see where to work the last stitch of the next round.
Round 3: Ch1, turn, skip the ch that closes the BSt, BSt in next st (this is the one that was formed when you pulled through all the loops on the hook in the BSt); work a BSt in each BSt to end, join. (18, 24 Bean Stitches throughout)
Rounds 4 to 12 (16): Repeat Round 3.
Round 13 (17): Repeat Round 3. Do not fasten off. Place SM2 in last stitch made (the closing ch1 of the last BSt). Note: If you wish to make the stocking longer, add repeats of Round 3 but be sure to end with an odd numbered round.
Heel
Tip: Work Heel Rows and then continue working stocking rounds to the toe.
Heel Row 1 (Right Side Row): Join Color 1, ch1, starting in next st (not where you made the ch1) sc 18 (24) sts. (18, 24)
Heel Row 2: Ch1, turn, sc in first st, sc2tog, hdc in each st until there are 3 left, sc2tog, sc in last st. (16, 22)
Heel Rows 3 to 7 (10): Repeat Heel Row 2. You will be decreasing 2 stitches in each row. (6 sts after last repeat)
Heel Row 8 (11): Ch1, turn, sc in first st, sc2tog two times, sc in last st. (4)
Heel Row 9 (12): Ch1, turn, sc2tog two times. (2)
Heel Row 13 (Size LARGE ONLY): Ch1, turn, sc in each st. (2)
Heel Row Side 1: Working along the side of each Heel Row, sc in side of Heel Row 8 (11) to Heel Row 1, sl st in base of Heel Row 1 (same st as the last st of Heel Row 1). (8, 11 sc on side of heel)
Heel Row Side 2: Ch1, turn, sc in first sc and mark this stitch (SM3), sc in next 7 (10) sc, sc in the 2 sts at the top of the heel, working along the other side of each Heel Rows, sc in side of Heel Row 8 (11) to Heel Row 1, sl st in stocking at marked st (SM2) changing to Color 1 as you complete the sl st. Fasten off Color 2. (18, 24)
Round 14 (18): Tip: With Color 2 you will continue to work repeats of Round 3 all around the stocking and heel. With Color 2, (do not turn), repeat Round 3 to beginning of heel (you should have 9 (12) BSt before starting to work around heel),
BSt in next st on the heel (SM3), [skip next sc, BSt in next sc] to end of heel, skip last sc in heel, join to first st (SM2). (18, 24 Bean Stitches)
Rounds 15 to 23 (19 to 29): Repeat Round 3. Tip: Be sure to count Bean stitches as it is very easy to skip one when re-establishing stocking rounds after completing heel.
Last Round: Ch1, sc in each st to end, join. Fasten off. (36, 48)
Toe (Size Small ONLY) – Worked in Color 1
Round 1: With Right Side facing, join Color 1 in center back of heel, ch1, sc in each st to end, join. (36)
Work remainder of toe in spiral (do not join rounds), place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round to help you keep count.
Round 2: *Sc2tog, sc next 10 sts*; repeat between * to end. (33)
Round 3: *Sc2tog, sc next 9 sts*; repeat between * to end. (30)
Round 4: *Sc2tog, sc next 8 sts*; repeat between * to end. (27)
Round 5: *Sc2tog, sc next 7 sts*; repeat between * to end. (24)
Round 6: *Sc2tog, sc next 4 sts*; repeat between * to end. (20)
Round 7: *Sc2tog, sc next 2 sts*; repeat between * to end. (15)
Round 8: Sc3tog to end, sl st in next st. Fasten off leaving a long tail to close the toe. (5)
Thread a tapestry needle with the long tail, pull it to the inside of the stocking and turn the stocking wrong side out. Weave tail in and out of the 5 remaining stitches and pull tightly to close opening. Fasten off.
