It seems everyone hates weaving in ends and I’m no different. Now to be fair, I’m of the opinion that the most secure method of finishing is to use a tapestry or yarn needle and weave back and forth 3 times over a couple of inches; however, I don’t always feel like doing that!
When I have large flat projects, such as afghans, pillows, etc, I sometimes use this method. It holds securely and I’ve never had an issue with wear and tear or laundering and it saves quite a bit of time. The idea behind this method is that you start working over the new ball of yarn before you run out of the old, then intertwine the old and new yarns over a few stitches and finally continue to work over the loose end of the old yarn to cover it.
I’ve created a short video to illustrate the method and hope you find it useful too!

Thank you for the joining hint.
I found your tip on Moogly and decided to check it out. Not only is it a great idea, but for me, it seems to be as or even more secure than just weaving in the ends with a needle (even going in 3 directions). I will be using your method from now on. Thanks so much! Now I have to go subscribe to your site!!!
Thank you!
Maria! That is fantastic! I am embarrassed to admit how many projects, over the years, I have left unfinished because I just couldn’t bear the thought of weaving in countless ends. I am just too undisciplined and, at my age, not likely to change. With your tips in mind, the blanket I am currently making now has a chance of actually becoming a gift! Thanks again!
Oh I’m rooting for that current blanket!
Great!
Get idea for adding new ball of yarn. I will definitely be using this. Thanks for sharing your idea. ?
Thank you so very much for sharing this method of joining a new yarn. I had never seen it before. I will definitely give it a try !!
Welcome!
This is brilliant! Thanks so much for sharing. I found your blog from Moogly and I’m looking forward to exploring 🙂
Welcome! We have lots of fun things planned for the next few months!
This is brilliant, especially when making a large project using one colour. And so easy! Your instructions are very clear. Thanks for making this video available!
You are welcome, I’m glad you find it useful.
This is a great tip! How would do this when changing colors?
When changing colors, this tip would not work as the new color would show before you wanted it to. I find the best way to join a new color is in the last pass of the stitch before the one you want to start the new color. Work your stitch until you have 2 loops left, then pull through with the new color and continue to crochet.
That’s slick! I will definitely give it a try – I hate weaving in ends!
Oh Maria, this is fantastic!! Thank you so much for sharing.
You are welcome, I hope you find it useful!
