This Mosaic Headband is a follow up to the Mosaic Mug Rug I released last week and follows the same principles and skills demonstrated in my Mosaic Crochet Basics Video. I love the texture, dimension and geometric designs that can be created with mosaic crochet!
My Mosaic Headband is a pretty fashion accessory made using just chains, single crochet, half double and double crochet and only one color per row! With the holidays around the corner, these make pretty stocking stuffers. Make several in your favorite color combinations!
Because of the nature of mosaic crochet, this Mosaic Headband is reversible. One side has the pretty geometric design while the other has a striped effect. Because of this I have a unique stretch band that allows you to wear it on either side without any unsightly seams!
I used Red Heart With Love and Red Heart Soft, I had at home, but you really could use most worsted weight yarns so this is also a great stash buster!
Now if you’ve never attempted color-work in your crochet, don’t worry! This method requires you to work with one color at a time — no changing colors mid-row; and the chart is easy to read and follow!
I have a blog post and video tutorial to help you understand the skills. You can find it HERE!
I hope you enjoy making these and will share your finished pictures on my Facebook page.

This pattern is worked in mosaic crochet. Here are a few basics for this method:
- Every row is worked in back loop only except for the first and last stitch of each row, or if otherwise noted.
- Each row is worked from the front (you will not turn) and will be fastened off at the end.
- Each row is worked in just one color; you will alternate colors for each row.
- When you see an “X” in a square in the chart, you will work a double crochet in the front loop of the stitch two rows down. When a square is blank, simply work a sc in the back loop of the previous row.
- The design will show on the front of the work, the back will be striped

Rows 17 to 19: Repeat Row 16. (19 sts after last repeat)
Row 20: Ch1, turn, working in BLO, sc in each st to end. Fasten off leaving a 12″ tail. (17)
Second Side
Row 1: With Color 1, and wrong side facing, join yarn at corner of end, working loosely, sl st in each st across, fasten off. (19)
Repeat Rows 2 to 20 of First Side.
Finish
This technique provides a finished edge on all sides, with the loose ends sandwiched between the two stretchy band sections – which avoids weaving in loose ends for all rows and makes the headband reversible!
Finish off raw edges: Thread a tapestry needle with the long tail, overlap end of stretch band over opposite side of headband, using tapestry needle stitch in place evenly. Weave ends. Fasten off.
Repeat for second side. Be sure loose ends are tucked between two stretch band sections.
Join the stretch sections together: With Right side facing, line up the edges of the two stretch band sections, join Color 1 at corner of stretch band section, working through both thicknesses, sc evenly to end of stretch band. Fasten off. Repeat for second side.
Tip, even though this is a small piece, I still found that blocking made it look much better.
