Mosaic Crochet creates such lovely texture, dimension and geometric designs and I love it!
I recently put together a simple tutorial on how to achieve this fabulous look and this project is the perfect way to practice those skills.
My Mosaic Crochet Mug Rug is a fun and quick project using just chains, single crochet and double crochet and only one color per row! With the holidays around the corner, these make pretty hostess gifts too, just whip up a set in many colors or stick to a two color scheme and put a pretty bow around them.
I used Red Heart worsted weight yarn ends I had at home, but you really could use lots of different yarns so this is also a great stash buster! The one thing to keep in mind is to use a hook 1 size smaller than you normally would for the size yarn you are working with. This is so you get a nice compact stitch that shows off the design.
Now if you’ve never attempted color-work in your crochet, don’t worry! This method requires you to work with one color at a time — no changing colors mid-row; and the chart is easy to read and follow!
I have a blog post and video tutorial to help you understand the skills. You can find it HERE!
I hope you enjoy making these and will share your finished pictures on my Facebook page.

Abbreviations (US Terms):
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
sc = single crochet
st(s) = stitch(es)
This pattern is worked in mosaic crochet. Here are a few basics for this method:
- Every row is worked in back loop only except for the first and last stitch of each row, or if otherwise noted.
- Each row is worked from the front (you will not turn) and will be fastened off at the end.
- You will start and end each row leaving a tail of 3-4”, which will become the fringe.
- Each row is worked in just one color; you will alternate colors for each row.
- When you see an “X” in a square in the chart, you will work a double crochet in the front loop of the stitch two rows down. When a square is blank, simply work a sc in the back loop of the previous row.
- The design will show on the front of the work, the back will be striped.
Row 1: Starting with Color 1, ch 18, working in the back bump, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch to end, fasten off. (17 sts total)
Rows 2 to 16: Change color for each row. Join new color in the first stitch of the previous row, ch1, sc in both loops of first st, work next sts as indicated per chart to end, sc in both loops of last st. Fasten off.
Last Row: With Color 1, sc in each st to end. Fasten off.
Finishing: Working with two rows at a time (example Rows 1 & 2, then Rows 3 & 4, etc), tie the strands in a knot. Lay them flat and trim evenly for a neat fringe.
Tip, even though this is a small piece, I still found that blocking made it look much better and the fringe lay flatter.
