Farmhouse decor has been on-trend for some time now, but I’m a little late getting on the bandwagon! However, since I’ve been decorating our house in the woods, I’ve come to love and appreciate the casual elegance of this style of decorating and now I’m hooked!
My son is making a beautiful farmhouse table for my kitchen (I’ll share it when it’s done) and I decided I needed new placemats to show it off, because I have no intentions of using a table cloth and covering up all that beautiful wood! Thus, the Farmhouse Placemat was born!
This placemat has a simple one row repeat but by using the thermal stitch, it is thick and stable and has a wonderful, understated, textured elegance. I added a few rows of a variegated yarn I had in my stash just to add a bit of color change, but really, it would be beautiful in just one color too.
I used a worsted cotton yarn. This pattern lends itself beautifully to Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie or Lily Sugar n Cream. I’m sure you would have good success with an acrylic yarn too, but for kitchen and bath items I always prefer natural fibers.
Thank you to Yarnspirations for providing the yarn for this project!
I hope you’ll give this pattern a try. Let me know how you like it and be sure to share your finished photos on my Facebook page or tag me on Instagram @patternparadise!

Gauge: Not critical for this pattern; 16 sc x 24 rows (worked in TSC) = 4”
And to store my crochet hooks, I love this case!
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- BLO = work in back loop only
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- TSC = thermal single crochet (see tutorial below)
- YO = yarn over
The placemat is worked from side to side, in the thermal stitch. The thermal stitch will create a thick fabric. Each row worked creates a “shelf” of stitches in which you will work the next row.
- To make the placemat taller, add chains to the beginning chain, to make it wider add row repeats.
- Fasten off at color changes.
Thermal Single Crochet (TSC):
Insert hook in BLO of designated st AND insert hook in the open loop one row below, YO and pull through both loops; YO, pull through both loops on hook.
See the picture tutorial below or you can check out my friend Carolyn’s video tutorial to help you master the TSC ==> HERE.
Color Changes:
- Rows 1 to 6 are worked in Color 1
- Rows 7 to 10 are worked in Color 2
- Rows 11 to finished width of placemat less 1.5” worked in Color 1
- Next 4 rows worked in Color 2
- Last 6 rows worked in Color 1
Placemat:
Row 1: Ch 47 (or number required to reach desired width), working in the top loop of each ch, sc in 2nd ch from hook, and each ch to end. (46 sc throughout)
Row 2: Ch1, turn, TSC in each st to end following color changes as noted above.
Repeat Row 2 until placemat measures 17.5” (or desired length, less 1.5”).
Last Row: Repeat Row 2, EXCEPT, insert hook in both loops of the stitch before inserting in loop one row below. Fasten off. Weave ends.
