Pin this Basket Weave (Criss Cross) Stitch tutorial to save it for later!
I call it the Criss Cross Stitch, however, this is really a variation of the Basket Weave Stitch also known as Interweave Cable Stitch, Diagonal Weave or Celtic Weave Stitch. Whatever you call it, it creates a beautiful, thick fabric with a woven look that I think is quite unique. I designed several patterns using this stitch and affectionately refer to the stitch as “criss cross”.

Criss Cross Stitch Instructions
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
FPdc = front post double crochet
sc = single crochet
- “post” refers to the completed double crochet around which you will work the FPdc.
- Pattern is worked in multiples of 2.
Base Round: Make a chain in multiples of 2, in your desired length.
Round 1: Ch 2, *skip 1 stitch, dc in next stitch, crossing behind the post just made, dc in the skipped stitch* repeat around, slip stitch to join in first stitch.
Round 2: Ch 2, skip 2 stitches, FPdc in next stitch, crossing in front of the post just made, FPdc in the 2nd skipped stitch (the 1st skipped stitch will be worked at the end of the round), *skip 1 stitch, FPdc in next stitch, crossing in front of the post just made, FPdc in the skipped stitch* repeat from * around, slip stitch to join in first stitch.
Round 3: Ch 2, skip 2 stitches, FPdc in next stitch, crossing behind the post just made, FPdc in the 2nd skipped stitch (the 1st skipped stitch will be worked at the end of the round), *skip 1 stitch, FPdc in next stitch, crossing behind the post just made, FPdc in the skipped stitch* repeat from * around, slip stitch to join in first stitch.
Repeat Round 2 & Round 3.

Round 1: Ch 2,
skip 1 stitch, dc in next stitch,
crossing behind the post just made, (you’ll have to push the first stitch forward so you can work in behind it)
dc in the skipped stitch,
*skip 1 stitch, dc in next stitch,
crossing behind the post just made, dc in the skipped stitch*
repeat between * around, slip stitch to join in first stitch.
Round 2: This first image indicates the placement of the first 4 stitches of this round. Skip to next image for detailed instructions.
To begin: Ch 2,
skip 2 stitches, FPdc in next stitch,
crossing in front of the post just made, FPdc in the 2nd skipped stitch (the 1st skipped stitch will be worked at the end of the round),
*skip 1 stitch, FPdc in next stitch,
crossing in front of the post just made, FPdc in the skipped stitch*
repeat from * around, (the last two stitches will be worked in the first skipped stitch from the beginning of the round and then in the last stitch of the round)
slip stitch to join in first stitch.
Round 3: This first image indicates the placement of the first 4 stitches of this round. Skip to next image for detailed instructions.
To begin: Ch 2,
skip 2 stitches, FPdc in next stitch,
crossing behind the post just made, (push the previous stitch down so you can reach the skipped stitch below)
FPdc in the 2nd skipped stitch (the 1st skipped stitch will be worked at the end of the round),
*skip 1 stitch, FPdc in next stitch,
crossing behind the post just made, FPdc in the skipped stitch*
repeat from * around, (the last two stitches will be worked in the first skipped stitch from the beginning of the round and then in the last stitch of the round)
slip stitch to join in first stitch.
Repeat Round 2 and Round 3.
As your work progresses, you will notice that it starts to curl. This is normal and may becorrected with a couple rounds of SC stitches to finish the edge.
