Poinsettia Coasters
We are now into the final two week countdown to Christmas and I’m feeling the usual rush. Of course, I bring it upon myself by taking on more than I should each year! But, what’s a girl to do, I like to do things for family and friends and I love the spirit of the holiday season.Â
Recently, we were invited to a last minute Christmas party. I usually have a few small items that I can bring as a hostess gift (in addition to a bottle or two of wine, of course) but this year I was caught unprepared! I looked through my stash to see what I could use and I had a bit of this pretty Aunt Lydia’s #3 Crochet Thread left from my Noel Tree Ornaments. Well, I thought, I could do something with this. I started out with the idea of making star coasters, but as often is the case, they morphed into poinsettia coasters instead and I love them!
I know what you are thinking….crochet thread, quick project? Well yes, #3 thread works up much like a fingering weight yarn and because this is a small project with a lacy feel, they actually do go pretty quickly. I made a set of 4, tied a pretty ribbon around them and added them to a gift bag with a bottle of champagne and some biscotti cookies I’d made. I wish I’d had the presence of mind to take a photo of my gift as it was a big hit!
I hope you enjoy making these and will share your finished pictures on my Facebook page.Â

I am having trouble understanding the first step. I am forming a magic circle? The image reminds me of the magic circle technique but the instructions have me a little lost. I ran into this with another pattern and ended up just doing a magic circle because I wasnt grasping the technique. i would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you.
You can certainly use the Magic Circle, however, for my sample I made a short chain (ch4), joined withe a slip stitch to the first chain to form a circle and then crocheted into that circle to start the coaster. Hope that helps.
