The Knock Around Hat is a basic beanie sized from newborn to adult, that has a “knit look” texture and the band is reminiscent of fair isle. This hat is great stash buster as you can use up small amounts of yarn for the striped section and it works up pretty fast so it makes a wonderful gift too!
I hope you enjoy making it and will share your finished pictures on my Facebook page.
Try it in lots of different colors and different yarns for many different looks!
Red Heart has a nice selection of new yarns this season.

- Beginning ch 1 or ch 2 of round does not count as a stitch.
- Join rounds with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round (not the beginning chain).
- Start each round in the join.
- Number in ( ) at end of round indicates the number of stitches in that round.

Thank you so much for another great pattern, I’ve made the Xmas trees one and a reindeer headband – so warm and comfy.
I’m so glad to hear it!
Hi I love this hat pattern. Have you done a scarf pattern to go with it?
Hmm, not yet, but that sounds like a good idea!
Hello,
I’m making the pattern for my son (8 yr old) and am following the directions for child. I bought the same yarn as pattern suggests (red heart soft, light worsted (#4)) and I am at the point where I have 60 stitches total and it says gauge check – diameter should be 6”… mine is closer to 5” (I am using 5.5 hook). Should I restart with different hook? Or add more stitches to get the diameter to 6”? What do you suggest?
Thanks in advance,
Emily
You could switch to a larger hook then remeasure or you could add one more round of increases. If you are happy with the density, since your gauge is a little tighter You could follow the adult size and then he will have it a few more years!
Hi, l love this hat so far, but l am doing round 8 for the adult. I have 70 sets, but if l do fpdc then dc so l am increasing. I think l am missing something, lol. Thank you Caroline
No, you work the FPdc around one stitch then the dc in the next st, so there aren’t any increases (except for the first part of the hat where you are increasing from the crown).
Hi, I have begun the Knock Around Hat. After examining the instructions I can’t find where backpost stitches are used. Am I missing something?
You are correct, the pattern uses Front Post stitches.
If you have time, I need just a bit of help. Want to make this hat her my son in law who is restarting cemo again. I would like your opinion on a very very soft yarn, since everything he wears starts to irritate him. If you have an idea or know what I can do about that, please, I am open to any ideas! Thank you
I’m so sorry your SIL is going through this and I wish him a speedy recovery. As for yarn, I don’t know if you have a requirement to use a natural or artificial fiber. If you can use acrylic, I think Red Heart Soft is a good choice, if you prefer a cotton, I like the Red Heart Scrubby Smoothie. I’ve provided links for both:
