I Iove the look of a newsboy hat and this one is so beautiful with the textured and slightly lacy stitches. It works up so fast with two strands of worsted weight yarn and a big hook or you can try it in a bulky (just be sure to check gauge). I’ve provided the pattern in three sizes so there should be something for everyone. I hope you enjoy making it and will share your finished pictures on my Facebook page.
Pattern Instructions
Size:
Toddler – Head Circumference = 18 – 19″
Child – Head Circumference = 19 – 21″
Adult – Head Circumference = 22 – 23″
Materials:
Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn such as Red Heart Creme de la Creme or Lily Sugar N Cream; 200 – 300 yards
Hook Size K / 6.50 mm
Yarn Needle
1″ Buttons (2)
Gauge (Double Stranded):
9.5 double crochet and 5.5 rows = 4″
Abbreviations (US Terms):
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st(s) – slip stitch(es)
st(s) – stitch(es)
Padded Single Crochet: On the brim rows, you will work a row of sl sts. The next row of SC will be worked over the sl sts, into the SC sts from the previous row so that they will encase the sl sts. You do not work into the sl sts themselves. This creates a thick, padded sc stitch.
Notes:
- Pattern is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together throughout.
- Beginning ch 1 or ch 2 of the round does not count as a stitch.
- Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round (not the beginning chain).
- Start each round in the same stitch as the join, unless directed otherwise.
- Number in ( ) at end of round indicates the number of stitches in that round.
- Work instructions between * the designated number of times.
- Instructions between [ ] are all worked into the same stitch.

I just found this pattern and I’m trying to make the adult size but I’m having an issue with round 5. I keep getting 50 stiches at the end and it says I should have 51 🙁
I’m sorry, I just took a look and there was an error in the instructions for Round 5, but it’s been corrected now. Please give it another try. 🙂
When you say 2 strands of yarn, do you mean from 2 separate skeins of yarn or do I braid them first and THEN crochet?
Two separate skeins, just hold the strands together.
Mine came out boxy looking. I think I did something wrong. It looks like a hat, but not a newsboy cap. Do you have a video tutorial of this pattern or no?
Sorry, I don’t have a video.
Do I HAVE to double the yarn?
In order to achieve gauge and therefore an accurate fit, the weight of the yarn does matter. That being said, you could use any yarn/hook combinations that gets you to the required gauge.
