Welcome to Week 9!

Only three more weeks after this one! This week we are working on these adorable Down the Chimney Gift Bags. I think Gift bags are the perfect solution for gift giving needs. They are easy – no cutting, wrapping or bows to tie – just put the present inside and add some pretty tissue paper. They are “green” – you can re-use the same bag to gift another gift to someone else which makes them economic and eco-friendly. They are sturdy and easily repurposed as lunch bags, shopping bags and more. In the spirit of the season, these bags have a fun brick work look, but they are great for year-round use. Try them in a bright variegated offset with a bright solid for a birthday gift, or use baby colors for your next baby shower. They are even great for bridal shower gifts and the bride can re-use them on her wedding day to carry essentials!

Instructions

Size: Small, Large and Wine Bottle

Materials:

Red Heart Super Saver Worsted Weight yarn. Yardage is given in order of size:
- Color 1 (Red) – 100, 150, 200 yards
- Color 2 (White) – 70, 80, 100 yards
Stitch Markers (2)
Hook H/5.00 mm
Tapestry Needle

Gauge: 14 sc x 16 rows = 4” (gauge not critical)

Stitch multiple for the bricks section = 6 sts

Abbreviations:
BLO: Back Loop Only
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
sl: slip
st(s): stitch(es)
tr: treble stitch

Special Stitches:

Esc: extended single crochet – insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop; yarn over and pull through first loop on hook (2 loops on hook); yarn over and pull through last two loops.

Notes:

Pattern written in US terms.
Weave ends as you work.
Beginning ch1 of row/round does NOT count as a stitch.
Number in ( ) at end of round indicates the number of stitches in that round.
Join rounds with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round.
Do not fasten off at color changes, instead, carry unused color in back of work and pick up as needed.
Be sure to skip the stitch directly behind the treble stitches.

Pattern Instructions

Large – 12” tall x 9” wide x 3” deep

Base

Row 1: With Color 1, ch30, sc in 2^nd ch from hook and each remaining ch to end. (29)

Rows 2 to 11: Ch1, turn, sc in each st to end. (29)

(Border): Ch1, starting in last st made as a corner, 3sc in corner, sc in each st all around the edges, join with sl st to first sc. (84 sts for remainder of bag unless otherwise noted)

Sides

Remember, when working tr in 4^th row below, you will skip the st behind that treble.

Round 1: Round 1: Ch1, working in BLO, sc in each st around, join.

Round 2: Join Color 2, sc in each st around, join. Note: This is the round where you will work the tr sts into the free loop.

Round 3: Ch1, working in BLO, sc in each st around, join.

Rounds 4 and 5: With Color 1, ch1, Esc in each st around, join.

Round 6: With Color 2, ch1, sc in same st,* working in free loop of st 4 rounds below, tr in next st (be sure not to work this too tightly, it should lay flat over the previous three rounds without any buckling), sc in next 5 sts*; repeat between * until there are 5 sts left, working in free loop of st 4 rounds below, tr in next st, sc in next 4 sts, join.

Round 7: Ch1, working in BLO, sc in each st around, join.

Rounds 8 and 9: With Color 1, ch1, Esc in each st around, join.

Round 10: With Color 2, ch1, sc in same st, and next 3*, working in free loop of st 4 rounds below, tr in next st, sc in next 5 sts*; repeat between * until there are 2 sts left, working in free loop of st 4 rounds below, tr in next st, sc in the last st, join.

Round 11: Ch1, working in BLO, sc in each st around, join.

Rounds 12 to 35: Repeat Rounds 4 to 11 three times.

Rounds 36 to 39: Repeat Rounds 4 to 7 once.

Round 40: With Color 1, ch1, sc in each st around, join. Fasten off.

Handles

Lay bag flat and mark stitches at two sides. There should be the same number of stitches between the markers on both the front and the back.

Row 1: Join Color 1 at one of the markers, ch1, *sc next 14 sts, ch14, skip 14 sts, sc next 14 sts*; repeat between *, join. (84 sts – chs count as st)

Row 2: Ch1, sc in each sc and around each ch to end, join. (84)

Row 3: Ch1, sc in each st to end.

Last Round: Work a round of Twisted SC or Crab St to finish the bag. Fasten off.

Small – 8” tall x 6” wide x 2” deep

Base

Row 1: With Color 1, ch21, sc in 2^nd ch from hook and each remaining ch to end. (20)

Rows 2 to 8: Ch1, turn, sc in each st to end. (20)

(Border): Ch1, starting in last st made as a corner, 3sc in corner, sc in each st all around the edges, join with sl st to first sc. (60 sts for remainder of bag unless otherwise noted)

Sides

Remember, when working tr in 4^th row below, you will skip the st behind that treble.

Round 1: Ch1, working in BLO, sc in each st around, join.

Round 2: Join Color 2, sc in each st around, join. Note: This is the round where you will work the tr sts into the free loop.

Round 3: Ch1, working in BLO, sc in each st around, join.

Rounds 4 and 5: With Color 1, ch1, Esc in each st around, join.

Round 7: Ch1, working in BLO, sc in each st around, join.

Rounds 8 and 9: With Color 1, ch1, Esc in each st around, join.

Round 11: Ch1, working in BLO, sc in each st around, join.

Rounds 12 to 27: Repeat Rounds 4 to 11 two times.

Round 28: With Color 1, ch1, sc in each st around, join. Fasten off.

Handles
