One day a couple of weeks ago, I opened a box and was delighted to find some Red Heart Super Saver in 3 lovely colors. It’s always a treat to get one of those boxes, it’s like Christmas morning! I knew immediately that I wanted to make a new tote bag. As I thought about the design, two clearly different looks began to emerge. I tried to decide which one to design and then I realized I didn’t have to choose….I could make both!
This tote bag is completely reversible. It is worked as one piece on a base and then seamed together to make it fully reversible. I added purchased faux leather handles, but of course if you prefer, you could crochet handles instead. The first side is worked in a basic chevron with a modification for a fun look. The second side has a tapestry look. The bag is nicely sized at approximately 12″ x 13″ not including the handles, but it is easy enough to increase or decrease sizing. Simply make the base bigger or smaller, make sure that the joining round of the two base pieces has a stitch multiple of 11 and you are good to go!
Red Heart Super Saver is a great yarn to use for a tote. It’s sturdy and comes in a very large range of colors and now it is even available in stripes and ombres! I used 2 of the 3 colors I received from Red Heart Yarns (1 skein of Jade and 1 skein of White) to complete this project. I only had a few yards left so if you plan to crochet the handles, you will likely need more yarn. I must admit I was not always a Super Saver fan. Years ago it was stiff and scratchy, but that is no longer the case. It is much softer and would even work nicely for garments and baby blankets. The yarn is pleasant to work with and runs smoothly through the hand and hook.
This project is a qualifying project for Spring Fling Month,

Finishing
I recommend blocking the bag at this point.
With wrong sides together and Side 1 on the inside, fold bag at Round 43, and smooth it down so that it lays flat and straight. Using a yarn needle, whip stitch Round 104 to the Join Round of the Base. Fasten off.
Adding Handles
I used purchased handles but if you prefer you can make your own. You could make a simple handle by working rows of sc as wide and long as you would like.
Lay the bag flat, making sure it is flat at the sides (so that the base is not crooked). Measure 3” in from each side and sew handles in at this point.
Repeat for other side.
I used these handles that I purchased at Amazon. You can purchase them through my affiliate link if you like: http://amzn.to/2qCwYYT
