With spring here, it’s time for some brighter, lighter projects. These playful coasters are so sweet with a dragonfly in the center. I made them in all different colors for fun but they would look great all in one color too. And, because each one only requires approximately 12 yards for the body and about 7 yards for the border, they are great stash-busters too!
I designed these in #4 cotton worsted yarn, such as Lily Sugar n Cream, Red Heart Creme de la Creme or Premier Home Cotton. They are super quick to make and look great stacked on a table, ready for easy access to protect your surfaces.

Size: Approximately 4.5″ x 4.5″
- Worsted weight cotton yarn, #4. Approximately 12 yards of main color and 7 yards of trim color for each coaster.
- Hook US H/5.00 mm
- Tapestry Needle
Gauge: not important for this project
dc: double crochet
sc: single crochet
tr: treble crochet
Split Stitch: Working a split stitch means that you will be working into the center “V” of the stitch below, not into the top loops. Make sure to split the stitch on the front and on the back of the work.
- Pattern written in US terms
- Weave ends as you work
- Ch2 at beginning of row counts as double crochet
- Ch1 at beginning of round does NOT count as stitch.
Row 1: With Main Color, ch15, dc in 4th st from hook and each remaining ch to end. (13 sts throughout)
Row 2: Ch2, turn, dc in next 5 sts, ch1, skip 1, dc in each st to end.
Row 3: Ch2, turn, dc in next 2 sts, ch3, skip 3, sc in ch1 space, ch3, skip 3, dc in last 3 sts.
Row 4: Ch2, turn, dc in next st, ch4, sc split st in center of next sc, ch4, skip all sts to the last 2, dc in the last 2 sts.
Row 5: Ch2, turn, dc in next st, 4 dc in ch4 space, tr in next sc, 4dc in ch4 space, dc in last 2 sts.
Row 6: Ch2, turn, dc in each st to end.
Border Round 1: ch1, [3sc in corner st, working along sides of rows, sc in the side of the first row, 2sc in the side of each remaining row], repeat to end, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. (3sc in each corner + 11 sc along each side)
Border Round 2: Join Trim Color, ch1, [3sc in corner st, sc in each st to next corner], repeat to end, join with sl st to first sc. (3sc in each corner + 13 sc along each side)
Border Round 3: Working from wrong side of coaster, Join Trim Color in any corner, working loosely (you may want to go up a hook size), sl st in each st around, join to first st. Fasten off. This last round will help prevent the sides of the coaster from curling up.
