I made this one in acrylic worsted weight yarn but I think it would look fabulous in cotton too (you may have to go down a size). If you want a big, floppy beach brim, just add a few more rows and while I provide the option of a crab stitch finish, I actually like this one with just a plain edge. The whole point is to make it your own and have fun!
Size | Finished Width | Finished Length* |
0 – 3 months | 12 – 14” | 4.5” |
6-12 months | 15 – 16″ | 5.25″ |
12-18 months | 17 – 18” | 6″ |
Toddler | 19 – 20″ | 6” |
Kids | 19 – 20″ | 6.75” |
Adult | 22 – 23” | 8” |
*Finished length is measured from crown.
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn, such as Red Heart Soft, in 2 colors, approximately 100 to 300 yards (depending on size). A few yards of a contrasting color if you are making the flower
- Hook H/5.00 mm
- Yarn Needle
Gauge:
Hook US H/5.00mm
8 hdc x 5 rows = 2″
Abbreviations (US Crochet Terms):
beg – beginning
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
Rnd – Round
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitches
Special Stitches:
Shell – 5dc in same stitch
Crab Stitch (Crab St) – working backwards, sc in each stitch (from left to right)
- Fasten off at each color change
- Weave ends as you work
- Ch1 at beginning of round does NOT count as a stitch
- Join each round with a slip stitch to the beginning stitch.
- Start each round in same stitch as join
- Numbers at end of round in ( ) indicate number of stitches in that round
- Work instructions in [ ] as designated
- When a number precedes a stitch, you will complete that number of stitches in the next stitch, example: 3hdc means make 3 half double crochets in the next stitch.

Band & Edge – All Sizes
I worked the band as joined rounds, however, you may work in spiral if you prefer to avoid the join. Just be sure to mark the beginning of each round so you may keep track.
Rnd 1: Join Color 2, ch1, sc in each st around, join. (48, 60, 66, 72, 72, 84 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch1, starting in same st, [sc, skip 2, Shell in next st, skip 2] repeat around, join. (8, 10, 11, 12, 12, 14 Shells)
Rnds 3 & 4: Ch3 (counts as dc), [sc in center of next Shell, Shell in next sc] repeat around, ending with 4 dc in beg st, join to top of beg ch3, sl st into next sc.
Rnd 5: Ch3 (counts as dc), [hdc in next st, sc next 3 sts, hdc next st, dc in next st] around to end (last repeat ends with hdc), join.
Rnd 6: Join Color 1, ch1, sc in same st and each st around, join. (48, 60, 66, 72, 72, 84 sc)
Rnd 7: Ch1, [sc next st, 2sc next st], repeat to end, join. (72, 90, 99, 108, 108, 126)
Rnd 8: Ch1, hdc in each st around to end, join. (72, 90, 99, 108, 108, 126)
Rnd 9: Ch1, [hdc next 2 sts, 2hdc in next st], repeat to end join. (96, 120, 132, 144, 144, 168)

I am totally confused on the band I have the 14 shells completed but lost after this. Thanks for any help. Linda
I’m sorry you are having trouble. If you still need help, please email me at [email protected] and let me know which part is confusing and I will try to help. Thanks.
Friend of mine saw a crysanthimum on one if your hats…think a rose colored hat?….and was wanting the patrern for the flower but cannot find it again. Could you tell us how to find it? Thank you.
Here is a link to my free flower patterns, perhaps it’s one of these?

Do you have pattern for sizes 3-6 month? Thanks.
The pattern is written in the blogpost, just scroll down 🙂
What is with the * after “Finished length”? I did not see anything to match up with that *. Thanks
Ahh, you are right, that got cut off. It’s referring to the start of the measurement, being from the crown.
Rows 8&9 and 10&11 of the brim both say the same thing. Before I get going on these rows, I wanted to make sure this was right? Seems like doing 126 stitches in all rounds of the brim would make it curl down??? Thanks.
I haven’t found it to be a problem because the increases in the first round gives it enough extra stitches to allow for the bounce and flutter and the subsequent rounds straighten it out.
In the very beginning at rd 3 the stitches don’t add up to 24, help!
The stitch count is correct. Be sure you are working one st in one st and then 2sts in the next st.
This hat is absolutely lovely! Thanks so much.
Thank you so much 🙂
Please tell me how to adjust pattern for hobby lobby I love this cotton. I’m making this for a young woman who has cancer to wear during the hot summer months. Thank you so very much.
That’s a lovely thing you are doing. I’m sorry, but I have not worked the pattern in the hobby lobby yarn to be able to give you any suggestions. I would make a gauge swatch, compare to the pattern gauge and adjust your hook accordingly. Here’s a tutorial on gauge that may help: https://pattern-paradise.com/2015/09/09/tutorial-crochet-gauge-does-size-matter/
I have started this hat three times. I measured the gauge. But this hat comes out about 3 sizes too big, maybe more. It’s very frustrating. I used regular Red Heart yarn. It looks like it was made for an elephant! What the heck is wrong?
Please check the gauge. If you meet gauge, then the dimensions will come out as stated. The hat has been tested by many testers with good results.
Made the mistake of not checking the gauge. I had to frog the hat twice when it was almost finished. Practice makes perfect. Ha ha. I really love the pattern.
Thank you and yes, gauge IS important!!!
This is such a fun summertime hat! AllFreeCrochet is a huge fan, and we even featured it in one of our most popular pattern collections, http://www.allfreecrochet.com/Hats/24-Beginner-Crochet-Hat-Patterns.
Thanks so much for sharing this pattern! 🙂
Thank you!
Ms. Maria,
I have to say I so enjoy your patterns! This one in particular cathcs my eye every time I see it. I don’t know how many times I have downloaded it. I had a transplant 3 yrs ago and the meds make me so sensitive to the sun, so hats have become daily accoutrements for me. The prettier they are the better. I haven’t gotten to make this one for myself yet as I have too many orders for others I am working on… Soon!!! Thank you so much!!
You are very welcome, I’m glad you like it.
Sorry, I am in UK and don’t know what that yarn is. Is it cotton or wool? I want this to be for hot sun!
Red Heart Soft is an acrylic yarn, however you could substitute a cotton yarn, just be careful to check gauge.
Picture looks very inviting. Pattern is not difficult to follow but the results are not what you see in the photo. I used worsted weight yarn/Red Heart Love for the hat, Red Heart Super Saver for the band. The hat is wider than it should be and for what is shown. The brim is rolling. Very disappointed.
That’s why you must test your gauge before you start. Even if you used the same yarn and hook as another crocheter, there are differences in the way everyone crochets. By taking the time to do a gauge swatch you can avoid disappointment 🙂
thank you so much! this is just the pattern that I’ve been looking for.
Great Nancy, I’d love to see how it turns out for you if you’d like to share 🙂
Well, the pattern did not really turn out like the illustrating picture. It’s possible that there is a mistake in lines 10 and 11 as the brim just rolls up.
I’d like to send a picture but can’t figure out how to attach or paste the picture.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you 🙂
Thank you!
