Introducing the crochet Chameleon Hat – a hat with a changing personality!
Sooo… Lately, I’ve been in a very “heart-y” mood and wanted to design a quick, sweet Valentine’s hat. As I was working up the crochet design, my thoughts wandered to the Olympics and Team Spirit and I realized it would be pretty easy to convert my Valentine’s Love crochet hat to a Team USA Spirit crochet hat. Then I had another thought (yes, my brain wanders a lot) –wouldn’t it be fun to take a simple hat and see how many ways I could convert it? So I decided to play a game. I named this the Chameleon Hat and each month I will be customizing it with a different theme. Stay tuned to see how the chameleon changes. Let the games begin!
The first is named “With Love”, and is a sweet Valentine’s hat in soft colors and embellished with a pretty heart. What little girl wouldn’t want this?
The second, “Olympic Spirit” is dedicated to USA spirit and all the Olympians competing in these winter Olympics. This hat is finished with a sparkling star designed by Charrisa Ragsdale of Mad Mad Me. Follow the link to see her fabulous tutorial.

I was looking for the shell pattern, which was left out of the hat pattern. Could you post it, or send it to me ?? Thank you
Please email me at [email protected]
Would cotton yarn work for this hat, if so how would stitch count change? I need to use cotton for the summer. Thank you.
I’m not sure. You would need to make a gauge swatch and match agains the pattern’s gauge. You could then make adjustments to your hook accordingly. You may find this tutorial helpful: https://pattern-paradise.com/2015/09/09/tutorial-crochet-gauge-does-size-matter/
Love the hat..I am working on it now and hope I’m not asking something that makes me look stupid..but when I got to the band to do the shells it says there should be 8 shells. I am doing the smallest hat with a count of 48 I keep getting more than 8 shells.. Should I be skipping more than 2 sc’s?
Each shell repeat takes up 6 stitches, so if you have 48 to start with and you divide by 6 you should have 8 shells. Please note that the sequence includes a skip 2 before and after the shell. Hope that helps.
Love the hats, can’t wait to make them.
Thank you so much for sharing your lovely pattern.
I knitted one with a small flower instead of a heart.
I’ll gift it to my friend’s baby.
Merci!
Thank you for these patterns. I will be making the little heart hat for gifts. I have also learnt something from reading other questions. Now I know where to look for the printer button. I have thought, like others, “how do I print this?” Thank you. Helen
I’m a beginner at reading patterns & this one looks like I’ll be able to get through it without any problems. I want to make a few of the St Patrick’s Day hats, however, I did not see the pattern for the rainbow & pot o gold. Are they to be found somewhere else?
Hi Colleen. Yes, you can find the Pot ‘o Gold in the Free Patterns tab at the top of this page. Here is the link:

Thank You. Took me awhile, but I found it! I made 2 hats for my 2 youngest granddaughters & so far 1 of them loves it so much that she wears it all the time 🙂
Yay! So happy to hear it. Please share your finished project on my Facebook page for all to enjoy. I have a feature on Fridays called FAN-tatic Friday and it is a show and tell for followers!
Thank you for the cute pattern which will look grest on my 1 and 3 yr old great grand dsughters
How can I print this item out? I love it… but like to take the pattern w/me when on the go.
Hi Shirley,
You can print by choosing the “print” button which is the first one in the section below the pattern that is called “Share This”. You could also copy and paste from here to a text software such as Word and then save or print as you desire.
Thank you for this pattern. The instructions are so easy to follow. My granddaughter can’t wait until I’m finished with it.
You are quite welcome. I’d love for you to post your finished hat on my Facebook page when you are done.
Hi! Love this pattern and your page! I have a question…..When I print the pattern all I get are symbols like this CPCC Apnaf cr N_rrcpl and the whole pages are like this! I know that you said that the pattern is in American terms, so I don’t know how to get it printed in English! Please let me know! I also sent you a private message and haven’t heard from you! Thank you very much!
Hi Addeen,
I’m sorry but I never received your private message but I just sent you an email with the PDF for the pattern. Hope that helps.
thanks so much for this wonderful pattern! I was just wondering, do you offer the [free] patterns available in .pdf format to download? or am I missing something (which, for me, is entirely possible LOL) Many thanks again!! 🙂
Hi there and thank you! I don’t have the pattern as a PDF download at this time, however, you can either highlight and copy/paste to a document or you can print by using the print button at the bottom of the post where you see all the buttons in the “share this” section.
Same here… they must have it protected from printing.
Please see my reply to your previous note. 🙂
Thank you. I did the 4 chains but will go to the tutorial and look at it for future.
What’s a “magic circle”?
Hi Peggy. The Magic Circle is an alternative way to start a crochet project that will be worked in the round. The other option would be to chain 4 or 5 and then close the loop to make a circle, then continue with the pattern as written. If you want to try the magic circle here is a great tutorial: http://www.mooglyblog.com/the-magic-circle/
I love this hat – thanks so much for sharing!!
Beautiful

Thanks for sharing! I love the hat pattern. I have recently stared crocheting again for my 2 granddaughters:) This will be perfect for Valentines day! Did I miss the shell pattern?
Hi Patti, thank you for your nice note! I’m so glad you started crocheting again, it is a wonderful hobby (at least I think so LOL). Thank you for your prompt response. I checked the site as you advised. Still having trouble:( The “shell” I am referring to is in Round 1 in the border of the Chameleon hat: (sc skip 2 shell in next stitch, skip 2)
Again, I am just starting to crochet again after many years! So I might be reading this wrong?
I know a shell can be a (sc hdc hdc sc) But not sure? I’m pretty sure there are many variations. Your pattern is so pretty, I want to get it right:) Thank you so much If you can help me I would really appreciate it!!
OK, so I’m an idiot:) I found the directions for the shell pattern right where it should be: in the key with all the abbreviations! I’m about half way finished. Thanks so much for sharing!
So beautiful and easy to follow!
Thank you Kathy and thanks for testing.
I would love to have these patterns, but do not see where I can print them out.
Please scroll up and take a look where it says “Share This”. The first icon in that section is for printing.
It would be nice to fave a print friendly button, where you could get the PDF
The hats are gorgeous. Thank you for the free pattern, I will make them for my granddaughter.
