Winter Haven Hat
The Winter Haven Hat is my design for the Hat Of The Month Club hosted by Oombawka Design and The Stitchin’ Mommy. Be sure to check out Rhondda’s Lacy V Stitch Slouch Hat HERE and Amy’s Sadie Beanie HERE or click the graphic below for more information on this CAL including the schedule!
I made my Winter Haven Hat sample with Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice. I used a #4 medium weight worsted, but you could really use almost any yarn you like, just be sure to adjust the hook size to the recommended one for your yarn plus one size larger.

For the Winter Haven Hat I chose a combination of stitches to provide lots of texture for solid colors, but I think it lends itself nicely to multi color versions too! This stitch pattern is an easy version of a crossed stitch variation combined with slip stitches. Watch the design and texture pop!
I provided directions for 4 sizes and guidance for further adjustments. The hat is worked in rows from band to crown and then seamed at the end. Counting and gauge are important to achieve a good fit.
Size: Toddler, Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium/Large
Follow instructions in pattern for adjustments.
Materials:
- Medium Worsted Weight (#4) yarn, approximately 170 (200, 230, 250) yards based on size.
- Hook Clover Amour I/5.50 mm
- Fur pom-pom (optional)
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends

Gauge: 18 sts x 16 Rows = 4” in pattern
Please take the time to test gauge. See instructions for gauge swatch
Abbreviations (US Terms):
BLO: back loop only
ch: chain
hdc: half double crochet
sc: single crochet
sl st: slip stitch
st(s): stitch(es)
Notes:
- Pattern written in US Standard terms.
- Do not work slip stitches too tightly.
- Ch1 at beginning of row DOES NOT count as a stitch.
To Make Gauge Swatch:
The hat is worked from side to side in rows and then seamed. Because of this and to maintain pattern repeat, you can’t simply add a few rows to adjust for length and or width, therefore, gauge is very important. Please take the time to test gauge.
Instructions are provided for 4 sizes, to modify the height, add/reduce the beginning chain by increments of 2; to modify the circumference around the head add/reduce rows in increments of 4 (the pattern is a repeat of 4 rows).

Join
With right sides together, fold hat in half and match stitches at ends. Working through front loop of side closest to you and back loop of side furthest away from you, sl st seam closed (do not work too tightly). Fasten off.
Closing Crown
Thread a tapestry needle with a strand of yarn about 24”, tie ends together so that you are working with a double strand of yarn. Turn hat inside out, from the inside of the hat, work needle through each ch5 loop at the top of the hat and pull tightly. Tie a secured knot to close off the opening and weave in ends securely.
If desired sew a fur or yarn pom-pom on the outside at the crown.
You can add a pompom if you like too! I have an easy tutorial that can help you.
