Ibiza Cowl
The Ibiza Cowl was designed for the Scarf Of The Month Club hosted by Oombawka Design and Amy from The Stitchin’ Mommy. Be sure to check out Rhondda’s scarf HERE and Amy’s scarf HERE or click the graphic below for more information on this CAL including the schedule!
I made my Ibiza Cowl sample with Caron X Pantone bulky weight yarn in the color combination called Olive Oil. This is a luxurious merino blend (60% Acrylic, 20% Nylon, 20% Merino Wool), soft yarn in a unique braid. It is offered in several color palettes specially selected by color experts at Caron® in collaboration with Pantone®. The yarn is easy to care for and has wonderful drape. I loved working with this yarn and how easy it was to pick coordinating colors since the work is done for you!
Of course, you could choose from a wide variety of yarns for this scarf and frankly you could use any weight, by changing up the hook and the starting chain to adjust sizing.

For the Ibiza Cowl I chose a simple stitch combination that would not compete with the color changes, yet provides some interesting texture. This stitch pattern is a super easy one row repeat that makes it the perfect easy project while watching TV or chatting with friends – sometimes you just don’t want to think too much, right?
The pretty decorative button feature will keep the cowl in place and adds some decorative eye appeal too and pay attention to the nifty fold under the button that allows the cowl to fold into a nicely rolled “collar look” too! I also added fringe because, well, I think most things look cooler with fringe!
I designed this cowl to fit an average size small to medium, however, it’s super easy to adjust sizing. Simply work your beginning chain to whatever length you like – just be sure to start with an odd number of chains. You may also want to move the buttonhole further from the edge but that’s a personal decision.
Size: Approximately 10″ wide x 25″ long
This size should fit a size Small or Medium comfortably, however, if you wish to make the cowl longer, simply adjust the beginning chain to your desired length.
Materials:
- Bulk Weight (#5) yarn in 5 colors, I used Caron’s X Pantone collection in the color Olive Oil for my sample. 2 skeins, 127 yards each, with a bit of leftovers of the lighter colors.
- Hook Clover Amour J/6.00 mm
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends
- 1 1/4″ Button – 1

Gauge: 16 stitches x 14 rows in pattern = 5”
Abbreviations (US Terms):
ch: chain
hdc: half double crochet
sc: single crochet
st(s): stitch(es)
Notes:
- Pattern written in US Standard terms.
- Color Changes: I wrote this pattern to be worked in 5 colors, but of course, you may use as many or as few colors as you like. In this pattern, color changes are made in the last pull-through of the stitch before the new color starts. Work stitches as usual until you have 2 loops on your hook, in the last stitch before the color change. Wrap the new color around the end of the hook, then pull it through and finish the stitch with the new color.
- Fasten off at color changes.

Fringe – Click HERE for my free video tutorial with easy step by step instructions.
Cut 17” lengths of yarn as follows:
- Color 1, Color 2 and Color 3: 12 of each color
- Color 4 and Color 5: 8 of each color
Put two lengths of the same color together and fold in half. Insert hook into cowl where you want to add the fringe, pull the loops through cowl and pull the cut ends through the folded loops. Tug to secure in place.
Repeat for each fringe section. I added three fringes on each side for the first three colors and 2 of each of the last two colors. Of course, you could add more or less.
Fold end without the buttonhole, down about 1” and sew button in place about 1 ½” from end.
