Valentine’s Day is upon us and there’s still time to make something special, such as this Heart Box, for a loved one. Of course you could buy a chocolate box or flowers, but it’s so much nicer to give a handmade gift, don’t you think? Fill it with candy like I did or be creative and use it for jewelry, or other small gift that you think the recipient might enjoy (you could even fit a few mini yarn skeins if you like).
Thank you to Yarnspirations for providing the Red Heart Super Saver I used for this box. You really could use lots of different yarns, even clean out your stash. Just make sure that the yarn you choose isn’t too flimsy and that you use a hook to keep the stitches tight. Gauge isn’t critical for this project but I’ve provided it to help guide you. I also added a bit of reinforcement to the base and lid of the box to help it keep a nice shape. You can use a medium weight piece of cardboard or any other firm paper or plastic you may have – I actually used a paper plate!
I keep the design pretty simple and it works up fast, but I wanted to add a little interest, so I contrasted the red with white trim. By making the lid hearts in two colors I got that nice layer of chains along the side. I also added one of my favorite trims to the lid edge – the Twisted Single Crochet which looks just like the Crab Stitch but is worked in the usual direction instead of backwards like Crab Stitch!

Turn piece so that Curved Side 1 is on your left and join yarn in first st with a sl st.

To make the base and lid of the box you will join two hearts together and sandwich a piece of cardboard in-between the layers.

Hi there . In round 2 of joining the hearts, after joining , you say to “Round 2: Ch1, working from the inside of the box, work around the sl sts from Round 1, join with sl st to first st.” ..What stitch are we using? slip stitch? SC?
PatternParadise says
Ha! good point! It’s a single crochet and I’m heading over now to fix. Thanks for letting me know.

Love this box! It’s adorable, but I have a question… Base of Box & Lid of Box Round 3 is it necessary to TURN to work from the outside of box? THANKS FOR THE FREE PATTERN! Your a sweetheart! Been crocheting since 1965 and just love finding new patterns to make!
PatternParadise says
No, you could work from the inside, but the stitch texture will look different.

Thank you… I’ll try it that way. I finished the box at it turned out great, I put some candy inside for my best friend for Valentines Day and she couldn’t believe I made it… it’s really adorable! Thanks again, Patricia (wish I could post a photo).

Love your box. Just want to clear in base of the box and lid of the box 2nd row you sc around on top of slip stitch of round 1. It’s not clear to me which stitch we suppose to use. Please clarify. Thank you
PatternParadise says
Yes that is correct, you work the stitches into/around the slip stitches from joining the two hearts.
