Endless Possibilities Hat
The Endless Possibilities Hat is my latest in “options” type crochet. I love taking a basic pattern and making small changes to give it a new look.
The base of the hat is simple and perfectly adaptable for men and women. This hat originates at the crown and is worked the same up to the band, then that’s where thinks start to look a bit different! One band is worked by crossing single crochet stitches to get a chunky, stacked look; the other is done with slip stitches in the third loop for a knit look. I’ve also played around with adding different types of pompoms – faux fur, yarn (If you like pompoms, I use this tutorial to make mine), looped yarn – and I even added ties and tassels to one! Another fun change (which I did not show) is to work more repeats of the “Sides” for a slouchy look. It’s amazing to me that by making these small changes, the entire look of the hat changes.
I originally designed this hat for my son with some leftover yarn that had long color changes in shades of grey, but I liked it so much I decided to try it in other yarns and was happiest with Red Heart Soft, especially the red one with a pretty thread of sparkle throughout!
To keep the hat basic and easy, most of it is worked in single crochet, but for a bit of interest, there is a little twist by alternately working them in back and front loops. I worked the hat in a basic worsted weight yarn, but really you could take this stitch combo and apply it to almost any yarn. If you want to give it a try, use my Basic Beanie Hat instructions as a guideline for sizing.
I hope you enjoy the Endless Possibilities Hat and will share your finished pictures on my Facebook page.

I’m loving this pattern so far. Just one question, when working on the sides do you always start with a flo even though you end the previous row with a flo?
I hope my question makes sense.
I’m not sure what you mean. The pattern has an even number of stitches for each round, so if you begin with a FLO, you will end with a BLO. Please check your stitch count.
I wish all hat patterns were written this way! I have a bit of trouble with gauge (usually have to go up a hook size,) and having the periodic gauge check was extremely helpful/reassuring. I have made two of these hats now. The only bit of trouble I had was with the band (the crossed single crochet one) because I can’t tell if I should make the slip stitch at the end into first stitch of the row or the stitch made into the ch1 space. I don’t have any trouble with the rest of the band rows, just the first two stitches because I tend to get them a little twisted in the process of doing the first cross over stitch, which makes it more difficult for me to see which one to slip stitch into. But it’s also teaching me a new skill, since this is the first time I have worked stitches across one another like that!
Thanks the pattern!!
Thanks for your nice comments. Yes, the crossed stitches can be a little tricky at first, but I think they are so worth it with the fun texture!
I am trying to make the Winter Indulgence wrap and would like to know if I make the wrap longer and wider if it will mess up the placement of colors from the suggested yarn Red Heart It’s A Wrap.
Well I wouldn’t call it messing up, but the color placement/breaks will be different.
