The Poncho, what a wonderful wardrobe staple, don’t you think? I love that a nice poncho looks great over dress slacks or a skirt and is equally at home over jeans and a tee shirt! The Fatima Poncho does just that!
This poncho was inspired by a wish-list my sister had for the “perfect” poncho. She wanted something warm, but not too heavy; elegant, but not too dressy; interesting but not too many colors or patterns and it had to be comfortable and stylish too! Well that’s a tall order!
I love the texture of this poncho. It’s an easy two stitch combo that makes such a beautiful pattern as you work it and the Red Heart Chic Sheep by Marly Bird yarn provides wonderful stitch definition too. The “knit look” split cowl collar is a little dressier than a typical scoop or v-neck opening and the two tone color combo is elegant and sophisticated without being too stuffy.
I also love the versatility of the sizing. I tried this on women from a size small to 1X and it looked lovely on all of them. It’s true that as my models went up in size, the sides of the poncho were not as long, but they were still long enough and the drape was still flattering. However, I’ve provided instructions on how to change sizing should you need to do so.
I made two samples in two different color combinations to see if the design would work with both and I’m happy to say I think it did! All in all, I think I met my sister’s vision and I’m delighted with how well this poncho turned out, I hope you like it too.
This pattern is part of the Chic Sheep by Marly Bird Designer Blog Tour on Red Heart Yarns. Check out other patterns, using this yarn, by some amazing designers HERE.
I used Chic Sheep Yarn in two colors for this pattern. I love this yarn! It’s soft and great to work with and holds a stitch beautifully. You may read more and see my other yarn reviews HERE.

This poncho is worked from top down. First you will work the split collar and then add the body from the bottom of the collar. The poncho will have 4 points until the end of the shoulders, then converts to only two points (front and back) for the remainder of the body. The pattern is generously sized and fits most from small to 1X, however, the sizing can easily be changed by adjusting the number of rounds to the shoulders and then the number of rounds to the hemline. Look for sizing tips within the pattern.
Cowl – Use Hook US I/5.50 mm:
Length- 24” |6.5” wide
Gauge: 18 sts x 5 repeats of Rows 2 to 5 = 4”
Row 1 (right side row): With Color 1, ch31, working in back bump, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, and each remaining ch to end (skipped chs count as hdc), place a stitch marker in the last st of the row. (30)
Rows 2 to 4: Ch1, turn, working in BLO, sl st in each st to end. (30)
Rows 5: Ch2 (counts as hdc throughout), turn, working in BLO, hdc in each st to end. (30)
Rows 6 to 125: Repeat Rounds 2 to 5, ending with a Row 5 repeat. Piece measures approximately 6.5” x 24”. Sizing Tip: Adjust the length of the collar for smaller or larger sizes.
Join Band: With right sides facing each other, sl st to the first st (marked stitch) in Row 1, remove stitch marker.
Remainder of the poncho is worked in rounds.
Body – Use Hook US I/5.50 mm:
- The poncho is worked with the wrong side of the cowl facing you.
- Join Rounds with sl st in first stitch.
- Start each round in the same stitch as the join.
Round 1: Ch2, working along the side of cowl rows, work 88 hdc evenly to end (This works out to approximately 5 sts every 7 rows and a couple of extra skipped rows). (88)
Sizing Tip: If you adjusted the collar length, this round must be divisible by 4 and each quarter must be an even number of stitches.
Round 2: Ch1 (does not count as st), *[hdc, ch2, hdc] in first st, hdc 21*, repeat between * to end, join, sl st into the ch2 space. Place a stitch marker in the 2nd ch2 space, this will be the center back point (The ch2 spaces form 4 points of the poncho through the shoulders). (23 sts on each side + 4 ch2 spaces)
Gauge through Border: 15 st x 11 rows = 4”
Round 3: Ch1, *[hdc, ch2, hdc] in ch2 space, [FPdc around next st, hdc in next st] until 1 st remains before next ch2, FPdc around last st*, repeat between * to end, join, sl st into the ch2 space. (25 sts on each side + 4 ch2 spaces)
Rounds 4 to 14: Tip: For these rounds you will work a FPdc around the hdc from the previous round and a hdc in the FPdc of the previous round.
Repeat Round 3. Fasten off after last repeat. (47 sts on each side + 4 ch2 spaces – after last repeat)
Sizing Tip: For smaller size make fewer repeats of Round 3, for larger size make more repeats of Round 3. This will affect the stitch count and row numbers for the remainder of the poncho.
Round 15: Join yarn in center back point (marked stitch), ch1, *[hdc, ch2, hdc] in ch2 space, [FPdc around next st, hdc in next st] until 1 st remains before next ch2, FPdc around last st, hdc in ch2 space, [FPdc around next st, hdc in next st] until 1 st remains before next ch2, FPdc around last st*, repeat between * once, join. (97 sts on each side + 2 ch2 spaces)
For the remainder of the poncho there will only be two points (front and back).
Round 16: Ch1, *[hdc, ch2, hdc] in ch2 space, [FPdc around next st, hdc in next st] until 1 st remains before next ch2, FPdc round last st*, repeat between * once, join. (99 sts on each side + 2 ch2 spaces)
Rounds 17 to 42: Repeat Round 16. Poncho measures approximately 19” at the center point from Round 1. Your stitch count will increase by 4 stitches for each round.
Sizing Tip: Adjust poncho length by working fewer or more repeats of Round 16.
Border:
Rounds 1, 3, 5, 7: With Color 2, Repeat Round 16.
Rounds 2, 4, 6: With Color 1, Repeat Round 16.
Round 8: With Color 2, ch1, *[sc, ch2, sc] in ch2 space, sc in each st to next ch2 space*, repeat between * to end, join.
Round 9: With US L/8.00 mm hook, ch1, *[sc, ch2, sc] in ch2 space, {ch1, skip 1, sc 1}, repeat between { } to last st before next ch2 space, ch1*, repeat between * to end, join.
Rounds 10 to 20: Ch1, *[sc, ch2, sc] in ch2 space, {ch1, skip 1, sc in ch1 space}, repeat between { } to last ch1 space before next ch2 space, ch1, skip 1*, repeat between * to end, join. Fasten off after last repeat.
Edge (optional): This round is optional, but I find it helps to keep the edges of the poncho from curling up and is a more finished look.
Join with a sl st in a corner, working loosely, sl st in each sc and ch1 space around, join. Fasten off.
Collar Opening Edge – Hook US I/5.50 mm:
With wrong side of collar facing you, join Color 1 in top corner of opening, working loosely, sl st in each st around both open edges of collar. Fasten off.

do you have a tutorial video for this pattern?
Not at this time.
round 1 of body says to work 88 hdc along the side of cowl rows. both sides or just side you slip stitch together? do you have a tutorial video for this pattern?
In the notes, the pattern states “This poncho is worked from top down. First you will work the split collar and then add the body from the bottom of the collar.”, so the 88 hdc are worked along the side where you connected the “collar”. Hope that helps.
Do you have video tutorial for this pattern. Or a close up of the stitches. It’s a bit confusing reading the pattern here
Thx in advance
I don’t have a video at this time. If you still need help, please send me an email with a photo of where you are having trouble and I’ll try to help you through it.
I have not been able to get the gauge correct. Using the recommended 5.5 hook the collar is 8.5″ and a 5.0 hook it is 7.5″. I am using Caron 4 medium yarn. What is going wrong? I really want to make this poncho! Please help.
I’m sorry you are having trouble. There could be variances in gauge based on hook (size and/or brand), yarn (even differences in yarn colors within the same brand), and the crocheter. Your slightly larger collar width should not effect the drape or look of the poncho, however, you could crochet fewer chains in the beginning chain (maybe 27 instead of 31) to get closer the the 6.5″ width designated by the pattern.
Hope that helps.
I’m making this poncho. I have the collar done Do you continue to work from the wrong side after the collar is done in rounds. Thanks for your help
Once the collar is joined, the rest of the poncho is worked in rounds with the wrong side of the collar facing you. This way, when the poncho is done and the collar turned down it will show the right side of the collar on the right side of the poncho.
Hi there, I am making this beautiful poncho, and I am a little confused about rounds 4-14. Is round 4 supposed to be a repeat of round 2 and round 5 a repeat of round 3?
Thanks in advance!
No, you will repeat Round 3 for each of the rows from 4 to 14. It is a one row repeat.
In the directions for the Body, Round 3, the Tip says to work a FPdc in the hdc in the previous round (round 2) and a hdc in the FPdc in the previous round (round 2). There are no FPdc in round 2. Should the Tip be used in Rounds 4 to 14?
Yes, you are correct! Thanks for letting me know, I’ve updated it 🙂
Hi there .. please can you possibly e mail the whole poncho pattern to me .. I’m not sure how to use it on FB and I love it !

This is great! Finally, a poncho with a shoulder shape that allows free movement and length to the arms. Fantastic work Maria. Thank you for the pattern.
You are quite welcome 🙂
