I am super excited to be participating in this year’s Christmas in July Crochet Along! If you aren’t familiar with this Crochet Along, you can get all the details HERE. Thank you Marie from Underground Crafter and Pia from Stitches N Scraps for coordinating this fun event!
Each week there is a new theme and this week’s theme is Patterns for the Home. I love snow-people and wanted to use one for this project. I designed Sparkles The Snowman to be multi-functional (as I do so many of my designs) in that he can simply serve as a cute winter themed throw pillow, a cuddly soft toy (be careful with young children, small parts pose a choking hazard) or, you may use him to deliver a holiday gift too. His hands are tacked in front and make the perfect resting spot for a candy cane, gift card, money gift or other trinket.
His sweater, hat and scarf are all removable so you can dress him or leave him plain white or perhaps make several sweaters and give him an entire wardrobe! I made my sweater solid with a few embroidered snowflakes on the front, but I think it would look so cute in stripes and then you could really use up scraps of yarn! Whatever you decide, give him a smile and have fun!
The entire project is worked in Red Heart worsted weight yarns. I used a ball of White Super Saver for the body and then scraps from other projects for the rest of the pieces, so this is a great way to use up partial balls too. You can find reviews of my favorite Red Heart Yarns HERE with affiliate links to purchase them directly too. I used buttons for the face and embroidered the mouth but if you don’t want to do that, you could even draw them in place with a marker.

- You can find plenty of fringe tutorials on line, but here are two I like:
- Weave ends as you work.
- Beginning ch1 of row/round does NOT count as a stitch.
- Number in ( ) at end of round indicates the number of stitches in that round.
- If you prefer, the sweater body and sleeves may be worked in a continuous spiral without joining rounds, just be sure to work the decreases on the sweater evenly for each round.
Instructions:
Snowman Body – make 2:
Row 1: With White, ch21, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch to end. (20)
Row 2: Ch1, turn, sc in 1st st, 2sc in next st, sc in each st until 2 remain, 2sc in next st, sc in last st. (22)
Row 3: Ch1, turn, sc in each st to end. (22)
Rows 4 to 15: Repeat Rows 2 & 3. (34 after last repeat)
Rows 16 to 20: Repeat Row 3. (34)
Row 21: Ch1, turn, sc in first st, sc2tog, sc in each st until 3 remain, sc2tog, sc in last st. (32)
Row 22: Ch1, turn, sc in each st to end. (32)

Rows 43 to 48: Repeat Row 2. (26 at end of last repeat)
Rows 49 to 54: Repeat Row 22. (26)
Row 55 to 62: Repeat Row 21. (10 at end of last repeat)
Border: Ch1, working around edge of snowman, sc evenly around, join to first st. Fasten off.
Note: Be sure to have the same number of stitches around both pieces of the body.
Face – use photo as a guide:
Eyes: Sew buttons in place.
Nose:
Round 1: With Orange, ch2, 4sc in first ch, do not join. (4)
Round 2: 2sc in each st. (8)
Round 3: [Sc 3 sts, sl st in next st] two times. Fasten off. (8)
Shape nose. Thread a yarn needle with the long tail, sew in place.
Mouth: Using black, embroider a smile. You may want to use a bit of blush to create cheeks too.
Assembly:
The snowman pieces are joined together and stuffed in sections for ease of assembly.
Put the two snowman pieces together with the wrong sides touching each other. Match all stitches. With the face facing you and starting at the neckline, join White, working through both thicknesses, sl st in each st from neck, around bottom and to opposite side of neck. Stop and stuff bottom part of snowman with Poly-Fil. Continue to join the two pieces with sl st from the neck to the top of the head. Stop and stuff head with Poly-Fil. Continue to join the remainder of the head and join to the first st. Fasten off.
Sweater:
- Join rounds with sl st to first st of round.
Round 1: With Red, ch70 loosely, join with sl st to first ch to form a circle. Ch2, hdc in each st to end, join. (70)
Round 2: Ch2 (counts as hdc throughout), FPdc around next st, [hdc in next st, FPdc around next st], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (70)
Round 3: Ch1, sc in each st to end, join. (70)
Place stitch marker in stitch number 1 and 36. This is where you will make decreases. Move the stitch marker to new row as you work.
Round 4: Ch1, [sc2tog, sc to stitch before next stitch marker], repeat between [ ], join. (68)
Rounds 5 to 19: Repeat Round 4. (38 after last repeat)
Round 20: Ch2, FPdc around next st, [hdc in next st, FPdc around next st], repeat between [ ] to end, join. Fasten off. (38)
Optional Snowflakes: Using yarn needle and white, embroider snowflakes at sweater top. Remember, no two snowflakes are alike, so have fun being creative.
Sleeves – make 2:
Round 1: With black, ch2, 4sc in first ch, join. (4)
Round 2: Ch1, 2sc in each st, join. (8)
Round 3: Ch1, [2sc in next st, sc in next st] , repeat to end, join. (12)
Rounds 4 & 5: Ch1, sc in each st to end, join. (12)
Round 6: Join Red, sc in each st to end, join. (12)
Repeat Round 6 until sleeve measures 6.5”. Fasten off leaving a long tail to join to sweater.
Thread a yarn needle with the long tail, sew in place at the sides of the sweater, about 1” down from top of neckline.
Arrange arms in front of sweater and bring fingertips together, stitch them to each other to keep arms in place.
Scarf:
Row 1: With Black, make a ch 24” long, hdc in 3rd ch from hook (skipped chs count as hdc) and each remaining ch to end. Fasten off.
Row 2: Join White in first st of Row 1, ch2, hdc in each st to end. Fasten off.
Row 3: Join Black in first st of Row 2, ch1, sc in each st to end. Fasten off.
Row 4: Working along opposite side of Row 1, join White in first st, ch1, sc in each st to end. Fasten off.
Row 5: Join Black in first st of Row 4, ch1, sc in each st to end. Fasten off.
Fringe:
- Cut 8 pieces of White yarn 6” long
- Cut 12 pieces of Black yarn 6” long
Use 2 strands of yarn for each section of fringe: Fold the two strands in half, insert folded side in bottom of scarf, pull cut ends through and pull tightly. Once all fringe has been added, trim evenly across.
Hat:
- Join rounds with sl st to first st of round.
Round 1: With Red, ch56 loosely, join with sl st to first ch to form a circle. Ch2, hdc in each st to end, join. (56)
Round 2: Ch2, FPdc around next st, [hdc in next st, FPdc around next st], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (56)

Round 18: Ch2, dc2tog to end, join. Fasten off leaving a long tail. (7)
