Summer is all about easy, breezy, fun and my new Weekender Tunic and Beach Cover Up pattern fits the bill! This pattern is easy to make, has great style and can be customized for size too!
I wanted the yarn to be the star of this show, so I kept the construction simple. The tunic is made with two rectangles joined at the shoulders and sides. A couple of strategically placed vents and openings at the sides and shoulders add a bit of personality and flair. I didn’t make the V neckline too deep for the tunic, but if you want to make this as a beach cover up (which I highly recommend), you could go as low as you like! It could even be worn as a dress with a slip or tank dress underneath. The stitch pattern is an interesting, but easy shell combined with basic filet and double crochet.
I’ve included sizing from adult small to 5X, and gave you guidelines to adjust the sizing as you wish.
Now let’s talk about the yarn! I LOVED working with this yarn! I used Red Heart It’s A Wrap for this design. It’s A Wrap is a cotton/acrylic blend in a size #1 super fine weight. The yarn comes in several beautiful color combinations.
Now don’t get nervous when you see the size weight, it is a super fine, but you can work it with a larger hook for a soft, loose and casual summer look. I wanted a bit more weight for this garment, so I chose to work two strands together and it was just the perfect weight and drape for my design! I also decided to plan the color changes rather than allow it to flow naturally from the yarn cake, so this required a little extra yarn, but I wanted a symmetrical look for this top. I am planning to make another one with the free flow yarn color changes too and I can’t wait to see how that turns out!
I made this top with Red Heart It’s A Wrap

Notes
The Weekender Tunic is an easy, fun top that doubles as a beach cover up too! The tunic is worked in two identical pieces that are seamed at the shoulders and under the arms with open vents for a bit of style and comfort.
The tunic is offered in sizes ranging from Adult Small to 5X; however if you want to adjust the sizing, please follow the instructions below:
- Modify length: Adjust the beginning chain in increments of 6.
- Modify width: Add/delete row repeats in increments of two rows. For best results, divide the required adjustment over 4 sections (Front Right/Front Left/Back Front/Back Left). I like to make the adjustments using the repeats in Rows 12 & 13.
I used two strands held together throughout for this tunic because I wanted a little heavier weight, however, you could use one strand and adjust your hook for a different look (yardage would be about ½ of that stated in the pattern). This yarn has random color changes, however, I planned my color changes to get a symmetrical look, if you allow color changes to occur naturally, yardage will be less than that stated.

Other notes:
- Chains within a row count as a stitch.
- Ch1 at the beginning of a row does NOT count as a stitch.
- Ch2 at the beginning of a row counts as a double crochet.
- For neater work, weave ends as you work.
To start second half of each section, chain the designated number of stitches, then double crochet to the marked stitch on the beginning chain of the first half:

Sew shoulder seems closed: Bring front and back pieces together with right sides touching each other, starting at neckline and matching stitches, sew approximately 2.5″; skip 3.5”, sew another section about 1” long, leave remaining shoulder seam unattached.
Tunic Side Seams:
Bring front and back pieces together with right sides touching each other, starting at bottom (before you added the hem) sew seam closed leaving an opening for the sleeve.

Hello! I noticed in the pattern you suggested using 2 strands of superfine yarn. If I instead wanted to just use 1 strand, should I use a fine or DK weight?
You should make a gauge swatch with the yarn you would like to use. If you meet gauge, you should be good to go!
If I am adding length to the L/XL pattern, where do I put my marker in the initial chain? I will be chaining 163 to start.
I would like to make the colour changes like you have (beautiful by the way), but this pattern doesn’t explain which rows to change. Would you happen to know where the exact colour changes are?
Thanks!
You can simply add the number of stitches you added to the stitch that I indicated. So if you added 40 stitches for example then just add 40 + 74 and mark the 114th stitch. As for color changes, I didn’t note them because I intended for it to be personalized for each crocheter. In fact I didn’t do the color changes in the same place for each of my samples. As a guideline though, I would suggest making the color changes at the break of a pattern sequence, so either at the end of the lacey section or at the ned of the rows of double crochet flanked by the ch1, skip 1 rows. Do what appeals to your eye!
Hi.. I’ve made this but the neckline/back was too plunging…
How can I correct this? Sorry, still a beginner here… 🙂
You can simply stitch up the center and/or back seam as much as you’d like.
how many dc make the shell?
It’s in the abbreviations and stitch section at the beginning of the pattern:
Special Stitch: Shell = 5dc in same stitch
I am confused with the start of the second half.
Second Half:
Joining Row: Ch43, working from the wrong side, dc in marked ch on First Half (see figure 1), dc in next st, [ch1, skip 1, dc in next st], repeat between [ ] until two stitches remain, dc in last 2 sts. [82 chs + 43 dc)
Row 1: Ch2, turn, dc in each dc and ch to end.
Repeat Rows 2 to 33 as in First Half
Where do we join before we chain our 43 stitches? Do we crochet into the chain stitches in the second row? What is this sececton fo?
The chain of 43 is to give you a place to crochet into in the next row so that you will have the shoulder section on the second side. So you crochet the chain, join in the marked stitch as noted and work to the end (this is actually the beginning of the first section you made) and then you turn and work back up the row you just made including the chain of 43. The rest is crochet as usual.
What size did you make the green & white beach cover in? is that a S/M? It looks bigger than the blue/green one that the girl is wearing at the top of the page.
I believe this one was a L/XL and I made it in a DK weight that I had but was not labeled.
I did make this one longer as it is intended to be worn as a beach cover-up. The pattern includes instructions for making changes.
