I love crocheted bags and try to make myself at least one new one each year. This Pineapple Tote Bag is inspired by my daughter’s love of pineapple and the colors blue and green!
The Pineapple Tote Bag is completely reversible for two different looks. One side has the cute pineapple motifs worked from a charted design in Tapestry Crochet and the other is a clean and summery stripe. Of course, if you prefer only one side, then you can certainly make just one (see the note in the pattern for how to work the base for a single sided bag).
I added a tie closure (can go on one side or both) so that the bag can be closed to keep your valuables safe. The handles and tie closures are made of a braided crochet cord that I just love! Since the bag is reversible, it does not require a liner, but if you make only one side and would like to line it with a fabric liner, I have an easy tutorial HERE.
This bag has lots of little tricks, but I have several tutorials to help you through, so be sure to check out the tutorial links below.
This bag is part of the Red Heart and Pattern Paradise Summer of Fun Series.

This bag is designed to be completely reversible with a different look on each side (Side One and Side Two), however, if you prefer to make just one side, follow the instructions for that side and be sure to follow “Round 5 – Join Bases” from Side One. If you would like to line the bag with fabric, please refer to my tutorial below.
The main part of this bag is worked in Tapestry crochet, following a charted design, which you will find at the end of pattern. I worked the rounds and color changes with a join using the method in my tutorial below. The straps are a “braided” crochet cord.
The stitch multiple for the pineapple section is 10 stitches. If you wish to increase/decrease the width of the bag adjust the starting chain for the base in increments of 5 stitches. To make the bag taller or shorter, adjust the motif repeat (Rows 1 to 15 on the chart).
I urge you to review the tutorials linked on the first page for helpful techniques.
********
Side One
Base – Make 2
Round 1: With Color 1, ch46, 3sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch until there is one left, 3sc in last ch; working around opposite side of beginning chain, sc in each st to end, join. (92)
Round 2: Ch1, *2sc in next 3 sts, sc in next 43sts*; repeat between * to end, join. (98)
Round 3: Ch1, *sc in next 2sts, 2sc in next 2 sts, sc next 45 sts*, repeat between * to end, join. (102)
Round 4: Ch1, *sc in next 2sts, 2sc in next 4 sts, sc next 45 sts*, repeat between * to end, join. Fasten off. (110)
Round 5 – Join Bases: Bring the two base pieces together with wrong sides touching and match up stitches, join yarn at one rounded end, sl st in each st through both pieces to join.
Round 6: Working from inside of bag ch1, sc in each chain that was formed by the sl st in Round 5, join.
Sides
Worked in in BLO, see video tutorials for clean color changes.
Round 1: Turn to work from outside of bag, ch1, sc in each st around, join.
Rounds 2 to 36: Work following the charted design (see chart at end of pattern) changing colors as indicated. All stitches on the chart are worked in back loop only and rounds are joined.
Round 37: Work this round as indicated in chart. Fasten off.
Round 38: Join Color 2 in center of one of the sides, working in both loops, sc in each st around, join. Fasten off.
Embroider Leaves: To make leaves at top of pineapples, I used a simple embroidery stitch called the Lazy Daisy. Thread your tapestry needle with the desired yarn color, starting at the top and center of the pineapple pull the needle through and then back down again in the same spot, leaving a loop about ¾” long, bring the needle back up at the top of the loop and then back down in the same spot enclosing the loop in that final stitch. Repeat for the two smaller leaves on each side making the loops about ½”
Side Two
Base – Make 1
With Color 2, follow instructions as for Side One Base Rounds 1 to 4.
Round 5: Working loosely, sl st in each st around, join.
Round 6: Working from inside of bag ch1, sc in each chain that was formed by the sl st in Round 5, join. Turn to work next round from right side of bag.
Sides
Worked in in BLO, see tutorials for clean color changes.
Rounds 1 to 38: Sc in each st changing colors as desired to form stripes. Join rounds using my Stripes In The Round tutorial. I worked my stripe color changes as follows:
- Rounds 1 to 4: Color 2
- Rounds 5 & 6: Color 3
- Rounds 7 to 10: Color 1
- Rounds 11 & 12: Color 3
- Rounds 13 to 24: Repeat Rounds 1 to 12.
- Rounds 25 to 36: Repeat Rounds 1 to 12.
- Rounds 37 & 38: Repeat Rounds 5 & 6. Fasten off after last repeat.
Joining The Two Sides
Turn Side Two so that the wrong side is on the outside.
Slip Side Two inside Side One and match up the stitches at the top. Be sure to line them up properly or the bag won’t lay straight.
Round 1: With Color 1, join at the side, working through both pieces, ch1, sc in each st to join the two pieces together, join.
Round 2: Sl St in each stitch around, join. Fasten off.
Straps – Make 2 (see video tutorial)
Use two strands of yarn held together.
Note: The stitch markers are used to make it easier to identify stitch placement, once you get the hang of the it, you don’t need to continue to use them.
Row 1: With Color 2 leaving a 12” tail, ch4 (place stitch marker in 2nd ch),
hdc in first ch – place a stitch marker in the first 2 loops in the back of the hdc just made.
Row 2: Ch2, turn, hdc in in first marked ch (2nd ch), place stitch marker in the first 2 loops in the back of the hdc just made.
Row 3: Ch2, turn, hdc in the two loops in the 2nd stitch marker from your hook.
Repeat Row 3 until strap is desired length. Fasten off after last repeat leaving a 12” tail.
Join the straps to the Metal Rings: Slip a Metal Ring onto one end of the strap and fold over approximately 1”. Using the 12” tail sew end of strap in place securely. Repeat with another Metal Ring at the other end of the strap.
Repeat for second strap.
Tabs for the Rings – work in Color 1
Tab 1 (For Strap): Lay bag flat, join yarn in the 11th stitch from the side.
Row 1: Sc 5 sts. (5)
Row 2: Turn, sl st in each st. (5)
Row 3: Turn, ch1, working over the sl sts in Row 2, sc in each st. (5)
Rows 4 to 13: Repeat Rows 2 and 3. Fasten off after last repeat leaving about a 12” tail.
Tab 2 (For Bag Closure): Skip 10 sts from last Tab, join in next st.
Row 1: Sc 5 sts. (5)
Row 2: Turn, sl st in each st. (5)
Row 3: Turn, ch1, working over the sl sts in Row 2, sc in each st. (5)
Rows 4 to 29: Repeat Rows 2 and 3. Fasten off after last repeat leaving about a 12” tail.
Secure Tab: Slip a Metal Ring around the tab, fold the tab in half. Thread a tapestry needle with the 12” tail. Sew the loose end of the tab in place at Row 1.
Tabs 3 to 5 (For Strap): Repeat Rows 2 through 13 of Tab 1 for the next 3 tabs skipping stitches joining as indicated below from previous tab:
Tab 3: Skip 10 sts, join in the next st.
Tab 4: Skip 20 sts, join in the next st.
Tab 5: Skip 25 sts, join in the next st.
Join Tabs to Strap: Fold Tab 1 over Metal Ring on one end of strap. Thread a tapestry needle with the 12” tail. Sew the loose end of the tab in place.
Fold Tab 3 over Metal Ring on opposite side of the same strap. Repeat the Join.
Repeat for Tabs 4 & 5 with the second strap.
Closing Tie – Make 2
Rows 1 to 3: Repeat Rows 1 to 3 of Straps.
Repeat Row 3 until Closing Tie is 15”. Fasten off
Secure Closing Tie in Place: Fold Closing Tie in half. Sew fold in place on bag. To find the proper placement lay bag flat and fold The Bag Closure Tab (Fifth Tab) over the front. Mark the spot in center of Metal Ring and sew the Closing Tie in that spot.
Attach decorative beads to ends of Closing Ties if desired.
Repeat for Side Two of bag.
