The Blue Hawaiian Baby Blanket is the result of my continuing experiment with Red Heart Super Saver, thank you to Red Heart for supplying this yarn, it’s always a treat to get a box with yarn to play with! The combination of the Pool and Jade colors in the Super Saver line triggered memories of the waters in Oahu and Maui and led to the name Blue Hawaiian 🙂
I love items that are simpler than they look, this blanket is just that. The textured center is a simple combination of single, double and treble crochet that I’ve not seen used before — hmm, maybe I invented a new stitch pattern? I worked in some color changes for a striped look, but truthfully, it looks great in a solid too. The bonus is that it is completely reversible which makes this a great stitch for so many different projects. The border is also designed simply but I think the combination of stitches is quite effective and provides a nice, tidy finish for the blanket.
I designed this as a baby blanket so it measures approximately 32 x 42″ but the blanket is easy to size using a stitch multiple of 2. The number of stitches along the side of the rows in the first round of the border would have to be adjusted of course. Just keep in mind that for the first round you are working a simple single crochet border that needs to lay flat and as long as you have an odd number of stitches and the same number of stitches top and bottom and then same number for left and right side, the rest should follow easily.
Red Heart Super Saver is a good yarn to use for baby items because it is sturdy, easy to wash, acrylic (to avoid allergy issues) and comes in a very large range of colors as well as stripes and ombres! The yarn is pleasant to work with and runs smoothly through the hand and hook.
This project is a qualifying project for Spring Fling Month,
so click the photo below for the details!
Pattern Instructions
Size: 34” x 42”
Materials:
- Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight yarn
- Color 1 (Jade) – 1 ball (364 yards)
- Color 2 (White) 2 balls (364 yards)
- Color 3 (Pool) – 1 ball (354 yards)
- Hook US I/5.50 mm (optional)
- Tapestry Needle
- Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight yarn
Gauge: Not very important for this project, however, I got approximately 14 sts = 4”
To make the blanket wider or narrower, increase or decrease the beginning chain by a stitch multiple of 2.
To make the blanket longer, add row repeats as desired. You may have to adjust the number of stripes per color to achieve your desired length.
Abbreviations (US Terms):
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
sc = single crochet
sl = slip
st(s) = stitch(es)
tr = treble crochet

Thank you very much the blanket is beautiful, did you make after row 2 a row of cs?
the pattern does not look right in the same direction. It looks like a row of cs needs to be between the pattern rows and maybe I’m wrong.
Nurit
It works as written 🙂
At the end of row two is the last stitch done in a stitch or the turning chain?
As noted, the turning ch1 does not count as a stitch, and the skipped ch in row 1 counts as a ch1, so it would be in the sc of row 1. Hope that helps.
