Enjoy this month’s X Stitch Challenge crochet pattern
Summer Wrap
This month’s X Stitch Challenge crochet pattern was inspired by a shiver! Let me explain…
It was a warm summer night, we went to dinner at a lovely restaurant by the sea without the kids (can you relate?). The reflection of the flickering candles shimmered on the water, the music played softly in the background, the food was delicious and the wine crisp and satisfying. The conversation tantalizing, and then, it happened…….a breeze off the water sent a shiver up my spine and I just couldn’t get comfortable again!
This summer wrap is an elegant way to avoid that situation or just a nice addition to your summer wardrobe.

The stripes are formed by crossed stitches (a variation of the X Stitch) alternated with simple chained strands. The border is a very simple, elegant, clean finish.
Surprisingly, it works up quickly too. This one took me about 6 hours total!
It’s so versatile and looks terrific worn in many different ways!

I too am struggling with this pattern. When I follow the instructions the first row if I’m reading it right you have sets of three of the Crosstitch clusters followed by the chain six spaces when I did that I came up with only two Crosstitch stitches at the end so do you have sets of 2 or 3 crossstitches?
It’s 3. The repeat is a set of 3 crossed stitches (which each take up 3 stitches, with a space inbetween and then the chains skip 6 stitches. At the end, you do one more repeat of the 3 crossed stitches.
Please help with the border. I have scalloped short sides and unsure how to fix it. Can I email you a picture? It feels like 60 is way too many stitches.
I did not have that issue, so not sure why it is presenting for you. If you feel you have too many stitches along that side (60 is what was designed and tested), feel free to reduce the number of stitches in increments of 3 until you are happy with the flatness of the side.
Hello! I love this wrap and crotcheted the body without any problem however, I am unsure how to proceed with the first row of the border. Can you provide more guidance on the border, i.e., where/how do you determine where exactly to place the stitches (esp. on the side of the body)? Thank you so much!
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the wrap. There is not an exact spot for the first round of the border. I work around the dc stitches that are on the ends. I try to do the same number of stitches in each (usually 2 in each) but adjust as needed to get the desired stitch count. The important thing is that your first round does not buckle or gap. It should lay flat and the stitches look even around. The next rounds will cover any minor imperfections. Hope that helps!
Love this pattern and have the perfect yarn picked out for it! I just had one quick question before I get started..does the chain 3 at the end of each row count as a dc? In other words, is the stitch at the base of the ch3 considered the first missed stitch of the x stitch?
Thanks and can’t wait to make this little beauty,
Steph
Hi there, the ch3 at the beginning of the row counts as the first st of the row, so you would count and follow instructions starting with the next stitch.
I know you believe in your pattern as written. However row one says to chain 6. The next instruction says to to the same 2 times and then says to repeat one more time. That equals 4 chain spaces. Your saying there should be 3 chain spaces and that is what the picture shows. There is a discrepancy here. I also described another issue with the instructions as a reply to another post. If you could please read it and address both I would really be thankful. This other person had the same problem so it make me doubt that I am incorrect. I hope you take no offense. I just want it to come out right.
I’ll break out Row 1 with the counts below. I think if you try the first row of the pattern you will see that it does work out.
Row 1: Ch66,
dc in 5th and 6th st from hook, working over sts just made work dc in 4th st from hook, [ch1, skip 1, Crossed St] 2 times, = 1 repeat of the crossed stitch section
ch6, skip 6, = first chain 6 section
[*Crossed St, ch1, skip 1, Crossed St, ch1, skip 1, Crossed St *, ch6, skip 6] 2 times.= 2 crossed stitch section + 2 chain 6 sections.
Repeat between * one more time, dc in last st. = 1 crossed stitch section.
So if you total it, you will have 4 crossed stitch sections with 3 chain 6 sections between.
I also cannot understand this section of the pattern:
ch6, skip 6, [*Crossed St, ch1, skip 1, Crossed St, ch1, skip 1, Crossed St *, ch6, skip 6] 2 times. Repeat between * one more time, dc in last st.
I chained 6 – then do I skip 6 stitches and then ch 1 again (on top of the 6 I already chained?) , then skip 1 and do the. Tossed st?
I tried it and it looked really bad.
Pls help – I’m trying to make for my mother in law. It’s a beautiful pattern/scarf/wrap
No, you ch6, skip 6 chs, then make a crossed stitch which is defined in the special stitches section and reads “skip next st, dc next 2 sts, working over stitches just made, go back and work dc in skipped stitch”, then you ch1, skip 1 ch, and repeat the rest of the sequence in [ ]. You then repeat that whole sequence in the brackets one more time and then just the part between the * one time with a final dc in the last st. My suggestion is to take the first repeat slow and when you see how it looks the rest of the repeats will be easier to follow.
I wrote this comment earlier today but don’t see it here. My question is about the number of chain spaces. The picture shows 3 ch-6 spaces but the chain 66 for the start chain gives you 4 ch-6 spaces. I am confused by the discrepancy. Which of the two is correct? I don’t want to crochet all that and not have the border work. As an aside, why are the picture and the pattern not the same?
I’m sorry you are having trouble. The pictures and the pattern are the same. If you follow the instructions as written you will end up with three repeats of the ch6 portion and 4 repeats of the crossed stitches section as shown in the photos. Perhaps you missed the the ending * for the final repeat?
I believe the wrap would be too large for me so how would I shorten it. I am less than 5 ft.
I’ve not tested it in different sizes, however, you could do fewer repeats of the repeat row and then adjust the border accordingly. I believe you would have to adjust the border stitches in multiples of 3, but again I haven’t tested the changes.
Love the look of this wrap and it certainly looks easy! But I am not seeing the row for the chains in between the crossed stitch rows.
Thank you!!!
tammy
The chain 6, skip 6 will form the rows of chains.
That is awesome!!! Thank you so much for this fast reply!!!
Keep up the fantastic work!

As a very beginning crocheter I have gone over and over with the first row and I have 16 change stitches left from the 66 ch. will they be used for the border ? Have I done something wrong?
Yes, you must have miscounted somewhere, perhaps in the skips. Each of the crossed stitches take up 3 chains. I would go back and re-do the row making sure to follow the number of repeats exactly as stated and you should be fine 🙂
Me too! If you do 3 sets of 6 chains each and 4 sets of crossed stitches it does not come out to 66 chains. So I examined the picture of the crossed stitch and noticed she has 1 empty chain between each set completed. To accomplish this you have to skip 2 stitches because the crossing stitch will give you one space in between. I did this also with the chain 6 spaces , if you skip only 6 stitches then when you do the cross you have only left 5 stitches empty so here I skipped 8 stitches and that leaves 6 empty chains. I thought this should do it but I still ended up with 5 extra chains. I am quite frustrated with the whole thing. I have ripped it out over a dozen times but can’t get it to come out right.
No, you only need to skip 1 stitch since the definition for the crossed stitch starts out with a skipped stitch, that is the second one you are referring to. Please try it again, reading the definitions of the stitches at the beginning of the pattern and reading the repeats carefully, I believe you will find that it works out well.
I had pinned this pattern some time ago, and just found it again today. Going to try to do this to wear at my niece’s wedding at the beginning of the summer. Thanks for this beautiful, FREE pattern!
That’s wonderful! Don’t forget to post a picture to my Facebook page so we can enjoy your finished wrap too!
Which is the tutorial to view the special stitches
Oops, the picture was missing. I’ve added it to the pattern page. Thanks for letting me know.
Lovely wrap
Truly a lovely pattern. I see the recommended yarn has been discontinued. I am not good at substituting yarns, but I have some Universal Yarn Bamboo Pop and was wondering if you thought it would work for this pattern. Maybe use a smaller hook? Thanks for sharing your designs.
I’m not familiar with that yarn but you can use this site for help with substitutions — http://yarnsub.com/
please help. don’t understand this….working over sts just made work dc in 4th st from hook,
It is the way to create the first crossed stitch. In effect it is as if you skipped the 4th stitch, now you are going back to work it. Work it in front of the stitches in the 5th and 6th chain.
Love this pattern. Thank you so much for sharing it.
As I’m a beginner, I always feel I need to check if you are using the American version of stitches? I’m from the UK and always find this aspect a bit confusing!!
Thank you 🙂
That’s a very good point. I will try to remember to add that to my blog going forward. All my patterns are written in US terms.
Thank you 🙂
Can I substitute Canon simple soft medium for the DK weight?
You can try, but I would definitely check gauge.
Thanks for showing all the different ways to wear it. I never would have thought of around the waist. So cute!
Yes Heather, it would look cute as a beach cover or even a funky night on the town outfit.
What a **lovely** shawl! I can’t wait to buy the yarn for it! Thanks for making it free.
Thank you!
Very nice! I’m excited to make this!
