This month’s X Stitch Challenge crochet pattern is a Market Bag.
I designed this crochet pattern with two versions of the X stitch. I love the texture that these two different X stitches create when offset with basic single and half double crochet. The straps wrap around the bottom of the bag for extra strength and can handle even the heaviest trips to the grocery store.
I love rainbows and when I first designed this bag I wanted it to be fun, bright and happy, well what’s happier than a rainbow right?

But I always like to experiment with different yarns and see how they change the look of a project. Using a neutral color palette I think the bag has a level of sophisticated charm that lends itself to more than grocery shopping, don’t you?
I used Sugar ‘n Cream worsted weight cotton yarn but there are so many fabulous options, the possibilities are endless.

I hope you enjoy making this quick project and will share your finished pictures on my Facebook page.

The pattern provides instructions for two bag sizes, Medium and Large
First work the base, then work the desired number of Motifs, finish with a Top Band and Straps.

Rounds 1 – 3: Join yarn in one of the side markers, ch1, sc in each st around, join.

Straps:
Row 1: Ch6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch. (5)
Row 2: Ch1, turn, sc in each st. (5)
Repeat Row 2 until strap measures 100” (or desired strap length). Fasten off.
Note: You can also make the straps using Tunisian simple stitch for a different textured look.
The Straps are woven through the slots at the Top Band and around the bottom of the bag in one continuous piece. They are then joined at the ends and tacked down along the sides for added strength.
Follow picture tutorial to attach Straps to bag.

Hi,
In picture “step 4” it says sew here with arrows. Do you mean needle and thread sew?
Thanks!
PatternParadise says
No that would be done with yarn and a yarn/tapestry needle.
