Rnd 1: With Color 1, ch2, 4hdc in 2^nd ch from hook, join. (4 hdc)

Rnd 2: Ch1, 2hdc in each st around, join. (8 hdc)

Rnd 3: Ch1, [hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st] repeat around, ending in the beg ch1, join. (12 hdc)

Rnd 4: Ch1, [hdc in next 2 sts, 2hdc in next st] repeat around, ending in the beg ch1, join. (16 hdc)

Rnd 5: Ch1, [hdc in next 3 sts , 2hdc in next st] repeat around, ending in the beg ch1, join. (20 hdc)

Rnd 6: Ch1, [hdc in next 4 sts, 2hdc in next st] repeat around, ending in the beg ch1, join. (24 hdc)

Rnd 7: Ch1, [hdc in next 5 sts, 2hdc in next st] repeat around, ending in the beg ch1, join. (28 hdc)

Repeat Side Rnd until hat measures 5” from point. Fasten off. Skip to Band.

 

6-12 months

Repeat Side Rnd until hat measures 5.5” from point.

Next Rnd: Ch1, hdc2tog, hdc next 26sts, hdc2tog, hdc to end, join. Fasten off. Skip to Band. (54 hdc)

 

12-18 months

Repeat Side Rnd until hat measures 6” from point.

Next Rnd: Ch1, 2hdc in same st, hdc next 31sts, 2hdc next st, hdc to end, join. Fasten off. Skip to Band. (66 hdc)

 

Toddler

Repeat Side Rnd until hat measures 6.5” from point. Fasten off. Skip to Band. (72 hdc)

 

Kids

Repeat Side Rnd until hat measures 7” from point. Fasten off. Skip to Band. (72 hdc)

 

Adults

Repeat Side Rnd until hat measures 9” from point.

Fasten off. (80 hdc)

Next Rnd: Ch1, hdc2tog, hdc next 37sts, hdc2tog, hdc to end, join. Fasten off. Continue to Band. (78 hdc)

 

Band

Rnd 1: With Color2, Ch1, starting in same st, [sc, skip 2, Shell in next st, skip 2] repeat around, join.

Rnd 2: Ch3, (counts as dc), [sc in center of next Shell, Shell in next sc] repeat around, ending with 4 dc in beg st, join to top of beg ch3, sl st into next sc.

Rnd 3: Repeat Rnd 2.

Rnd 4: Ch1, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, [sc next 3 sts, hdc next 3 sts] around to end (last repeat ends with hdc), join. Fasten off.

 

Brim

Rnd 1: Join Color 1, ch1, sc in each st to end, join.

Rnd 2: Ch1, working in FRONT LOOPS ONLY, sc in each st to end, join.

Rnd 3: Ch1, [hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st] repeat to end, join.

 

0-3 months

Rnd 4: Ch1, [sc in next st, skip 2, Shell in next st, skip 2], repeat to end, join.

 

6-12 months

Rnd 4: Ch1, hdc in each st to end, join.

Rnd 4 and 5: Ch1, hdc in each st to end, join.

Cord

Make a chain long enough to go around the band and tie into a knot, sl st in the bottom loop of each ch to end. Fasten off.

 

Square Patch

I worked this in Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS), but you could work it in sc if you prefer. For a simple TSS tutorial see:

Ch7, work Tunisian Simple Stitch in each st ch.

Repeat 4 more rows, work finishing row. Fasten off.

 

Heart Patch

Row 1: Ch2, 3sc in 2^nd ch from hook. (3 sc)

Row 2: Ch1, turn, sc in same st, 2sc in next st, sc in last st. (4 sc)

Row 3: Ch1, turn, sc in same st, 2sc in next 2 sts, sc in last st. (6 sc)

Row 4 to 6: Ch1, turn, sc in same st, and each st to end. (6 sc)

Row 7: Ch1, sc in same st, [hdc, dc, hdc] next st, sl st next 2 sts, [hdc, dc, hdc] next st, sc in last st. (10 sts)

Work a round of sc around heart to finish.

 

Finishing

Weave ribbon in center round of Band and tie knot. Sew patches in place, sew decorative stitches around edges of patches. If you use a cotton yarn and prefer a worn look, snip 1 ply of the yarn on random stitches throughout.
