My Blog Anniversary Celebration continues with a new free hat pattern!
The September Chameleon Hat takes to the skies in an aviator style ready for lift off in pursuit of new adventures!
Friendly Skies Hat
For this version of the hat, I converted the brim into an aviator faux flap and added long earflaps and fur trim. The contrasting band gives the illusion of a goggle band too. Try it in many different colors and button combinations for many different looks! ~

- Worsted weight yarn such as Red Heart Soft, in 2 colors, approximately 200-500 yards depending upon size.
- Fun Fur for trim
- 3/4″ buttons – 2
Gauge:
Hook US G/4.00 mm 9 hdc x 6 rounds = 2″
Hook US H/5.00 mm 8 hdc x 5 rounds = 2″

hdc = half double crochet
hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 stitches together
sc = single crochet
Rnd = Round
sl st = slip stitch
st(s) = stitches)

Notes:
- Pay attention to color changes, make them in the last pull through in last st of each row.
- Fasten off at color change.
- Weave ends as you work.
- Ch1 at beginning of round DOES NOT count as a stitch.
- Join each round with slip stitch to beginning stitch.
- Numbers in ( ) at end of round/row represent the number of stitches in that round/row.
- Work instructions in [ ] as designated. Example: [sc, dc, sc] 3 times means repeat everything in the [ ] 3 times.
- When a number precedes a stitch you will complete that number of stitches in the next stitch. Example: 3hdc means make 3 hdc in the next stitch.

Love this pattern. Thank you for the free share. I enjoy the comments also, as sometimes it clears up, or gives me a heads up, on something to double check. When printing these patterns, to save paper, all one needs to do is set it up with the printer, what pages to print. If one doesn’t want the adds, just cut and paste to a word pad program, the part you want. Be sure to add the name and web address to your paper so you can give credit, or look the pattern back up, if needed. Thanks again for being so generous with your pattern writing gift.
Thank you so much! I enjoyed your note and sentiment 🙂
Can’t wait to try this one! Very Cute
thank you so much for this pattern! it’s really clear and easy. I don’t really speak english and I understand it… Your blog is cool!
Thank you!
Which is color #1 and which is the main color?
In my sample the Main Color #1 is the Grey, #2 is Navy.
I just love this hat, thanks so much for your generosity I can’t wait to try this x
Awesome hat, I’m working on this as a gift for my dad for Christmas. I have made it to the ear flaps and I admit I’m confused. Where would I want to start the flaps? Maybe I’m missing it. If you could let me know I would appreciate it.
When you finish the last round of the hat, do not fasten off, instead continue with the directions for the first earflap. Once that one is done, fasten off, skip the designated # of stitches to get to the other side of the head and then start over with the earflap instructions. Hope that helps.
please make your patterns printable. no one wants to waste the ink printing all the comments.
iin fact take comments right out. no one reads them anyway
Thank you for your note Bette. My FREE patterns are printable, however, should you prefer an ad free downloaded version it is available for $1. Please message me with which pattern you are interested in.
I am making the hat and can not find the shell instructions.
Please help, I know I will feel dumb after you tell me.
LOL Patty, I know the feeling. The shell is 5 double crochets in the same stitch and is defined in the abbreviations section next to the sizing chart. Hope that helps!
Thanks so much.
Ok I read that I thought. Oh my gosh. Head hitting wall. 🙂
Hi! I am having trouble understanding how to crochet the gauge swatch. Am I supposed to crochet 6 rounds of 9 hdc? Or do I start the pattern and after 6 rounds then I measure?
Thanks so much!
I would work up the gauge swatch first so you can make any adjustments before you start your project 🙂
Is there an error on the adult ear flap, if you start with 14 sts and reduce by 4 that leaves10 not 8. Also on the band on row 4 should you have 80 hdc ?
You are correct, the ear flap should end with 10 stitches not 8, I’ve updated the pattern accordingly. As for Round 4 of the band, no it should actually be 84 as I force the # of shells in the first row of the band.
love this pattern. I would like to make a scarf to match . What would be an apportate Mesurements for a scarf to fit a one year old with fur edges?
Thanks very much
Oh that sounds super cute! I’ve never made a scarf for a one year old, but I would probably guess around 30 – 36″. You might want to look on the internet to see what common sizes they are sold in. Please share your picture when you are done!
Thank you. I will. I am having problems understanding the band instructions. Not sure why . Please tell me how to do the shell. I am doing the hat for an toddler and it tells me I should have 12 shells. Since I am not sure what I am doing I sc chain1 skip 2 but I know this isnt right and the shell count would be totally off.
Thanks
Never mind duh. Just seen the instructions on the sell
Cant wait to start making all of these hats. I crochet for charity
I am making your gorgeous hat and wonder if the crochet hook I am using is too small. I am using the G(4.0) hook as advised but the actual product seems very small. Is there something I am doing wrong that I am not aware of? Thank you!
Hi Nancy, everyone crochets slightly differently. I would suggest doing a gauge swatch. You may have to go up a hook size to achieve the gauge.
Thank you. Will try this. Adorable hat but seems small.
So cute !!!
