With Father’s Day around the corner I was determined to design something in crochet for my husband, but what would it be? He is not much of a hat or sweater wearer, he has enough slippers and how many drink cozies does one person really need? Then one day, while searching for something in the storage closet — bop! A bag of clubs fell over and hit me in the head and I had one of those V8 moments — club covers!!
Once the covers were done, I tried them on the clubs to see how they looked, pretty good I thought. But, now I had another problem, his ratty old towel looked like, well…. a RATTY OLD TOWEL! So, the towel was conceived, complete with monogram.
These are quick to work up and fun stash busters too.

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn in as many colors as you like. I used 3 colors, approximately 100 yards total per club cover and 200 yards for towel.
Gauge:
Hook US G (4.00 mm)
3 V-St, 5 ½ Rows = 2”
Hook US I (5.50 mm)
Size:
Covers: To fit average golf club, approximately 10” circumference x 10” long.
Towel: 12” x 15”
Change color at end of each round or as desired. To achieve a clean color change, complete the last stitch of each round with the new color.

Turn towel to work from opposite side, join yarn in any corner, sl st in each sc around, join with sl st to beg sl st. Fasten off.
Numbers/Letters
There are many online sources to help you with this step. I like to do it one of two ways:
1. With yarn needle in contrasting color, embroider the numbers or letters over the single crochet stitches in the band section. -or-
2. Ch a strand long enough to shape the number or letter, sl st in each ch made to maket he letters wider, with yarn needle threaded with matching yarn, sew in place forming the shape of the number or letter.

We just exchanged our gifts last night and I gave my son-in-law a pair of fingerless gloves I crocheted. He put them on and said, well, this gives me an idea. I need for you to make me some golf club covers, you know with the pom poms on them! Of course, I am delighted that I can make something for him that he actually wants! I am nearly 80 and almost chair bound, so I crochet a lot. He is retiring in the spring and is looking forward to playing MORE golf! I am delighted to find your pattern and have printed it off and the pom pom instructions also. I have emailed the picture of the club covers to him for approval and told him to pick his colors and tell me how many………….. Thanks so much. 12/25/15 1:30 PM
I’m so glad! Thanks for letting me know 🙂
Do you carry the yarn between rows? Or do you break it and weave in the end?
You can do it as you choose, I usually carry the yarn to avoid weaving in ends.
Can you help me please. I have just made the first Golf cover for my husbands golf clubs, he has sorted the colours as well. I have made the first one but it doesn’t fit No 1 golf club, it is not wide enough. Can you tell me how I can make the top of it bigger please, the diameter and width is 5 inches. wide and 5 inches across.
I am using double knitting wool.
thank you
regards
Sandra
Hi Sandra, Yes, the pattern was designed for worsted weight yarn which will produce a larger finished product. You can try adding another row of increases after Row 4 before you start the zig zag (you would do 2hdc in one st, then hdc the next and repeat around – this would give you 48 sts). You could also try a larger crochet hook until you meet gauge.
I have a question on the towel. In Row 1, how do you get 40 hdc when you chained 39? I ended up with 36 hdc. Then in Row 2, I ended up with 18 V-St’s instead of 19. Am I suppose to be chaining 41 instead of 39?
Hi there, you were correct, there was an error. You need to chain 42, work in the 3rd ch for a total of 41 hdc.
I’ve made the corrections to the pattern. Thanks for the note.
i love this pattern and it will make a great Christmas gift for my dad. I am having trouble understanding rows 24-25. How do you end up with 30 hdc in 18 v-stitches? Thank you in advance for the help 🙂
I figured it out! Yay!
How did you do it? I’m stuck on row 24-25.
Hi Lou, you work the stitches in the sequence identified in brackets using the space from the Vstitch an the stitches that surround it.
I have been taking guitar lessons from a retired teacher and he golfs. He wont take money for my lessons but this will be a great gift for him. Thanks for the pattern.
Very welcome!
This is a beautiful pattern! Thank you for sharing! I have a few questions: What type of yarn did you use; cotton, acrylic, or a blend? What brand?
Thank you! I used Red Heart Soft Acrylic, but you could really use anything you like. The pattern is written for worsted weight.
Just acquired a grandson-in-law and was wondering what to do for Christmas. This is perfect as he is a golfer. Thank you so much for the pattern. I know he will love this set.
You are very welcome! Please share your finished pictures, we love to see them on our FB page!
Thanks for sharing Kim!
