The Bethel Poncho is a pretty fashion accessory that will keep you in style year-round! The lacy stitch pattern combined with the simple construction makes it a flattering and functional piece.
The design for this poncho was inspired by a trip to the Bethel Woods Woodstock Museum in Bethel, NY. The museum honors the famous music festival with memorabilia, films and artifacts. I’ve visited the museum many times and each time I find something I hadn’t noticed the previous times. I love looking at the fashions of the time with their bright colors, fringe and crocheted motifs.
The Yarn:
For the Bethel Poncho, I used Aisling Yarns Hand-Dyed 100% Blue Face Leicester. I came across this beautiful yarn at a fair held on the Bethel Woods Museum grounds. There was a small booth with beautifully wrapped skeins of gorgeous colorways. I was drawn to this particular color because it felt warm and inviting to me. The yarn is a 100% wool fingering weight but I’m sure you could use an alternative in the same weight with good success.
The Design:
The Bethel Poncho is a pretty lacy design created with a two row repeat. The poncho is worked in two rectangles that are then assembled to form the poncho. A border and neckline is added for stability and visual interest.
I hope you’ll give this poncho a try!

The poncho is worked in two panels, which are then seamed together to form a neckline. You will then add a border along the bottom and ribbing around the neckline.
Panel – Make 2
- Ch1 at beginning of row does not count as a stitch.
- Size changes are provided in ( ) in order
- Stitch multiple 10 + 1
Row 1: Ch (72, 82, 92, 102), sc in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch. (Your stitch count throughout will be 1 st less than your beginning chain)
Row 2 (Right Side Row): Ch1, turn, sc in first st, [ch5, skip 4 sts, sc in next st] repeat to end.
Row 3: Ch5 (counts as dc + ch2), turn, sc in center of next ch5 space, [Shell in next sc, sc in center of next ch5 space, ch5, sc in center of next ch5 space], repeat until there is one ch5 space remaining, Shell in next sc, sc in center of last ch5 space, ch2, dc in last sc.
Row 4: Ch1, turn, sc in first st, [ch5, sc in center of next Shell, ch5, sc in center of next ch5 space] repeat until there is one Shell remaining, ch5, sc in center of last Shell, ch5, sc in last sc.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 (ending with a Row 3 repeat) until piece measures the length in the chart above.
Last Row: Ch1, turn, sc in first st, [ch4, sc in center of next Shell, ch4, sc in center of next ch5 space] repeat until there is one Shell remaining, ch4, sc in center of last Shell, ch4, sc in last sc. Fasten off.
Edge: You will work a row of sc around 3 sides of each panel in order to have an even number of stitches to join the panels.
Join yarn at corner of first row, working along the first long end, ch1, sc (142, 162, 182, 202) evenly along edge to corner, being sure not to have buckles or ruffling, ch1, turn to work across short end, sc in each st to corner, ch1, turn to work along last long edge, sc (142, 162, 182, 202) evenly along edge to corner. Fasten off.
Joining Panels
I blocked each panel before joining. With right sides together, and matching edges, join one short end to the edge of a long end to form an “L”. You can either slip stich the seam together or using a tapestry needle, whip stitch it closed.
For the second seam, bring short end to opposite long end (match the letters from the diagram below and follow the arrows) match stitches and slip stitch or whip stitch seam closed (see red zig zag lines for where to seam). Fasten off.
Borders: Join all rounds with a sl st to the first stitch of the round.
Bottom
Round 1: Decide which side is your front and back. Join yarn at center back point, ch1, *[hdc, ch1, hdc] in corner stitch, hdc in each st to next corner*, repeat between*, join.
Rounds 2 & 3: Sl st into the ch1 space, ch1, *[hdc, ch1, hdc] in corner ch1 space, hdc in each st to next corner*, repeat between*, join.
Round 4: Working loosely, sl st in each st all around poncho edge, join. Fasten off.
Neckline
Round 1: Join one st to the right of back V shape at neckline, ch1, hdc in same st, hdc in V join, hdc in each st to next V, hdc in V join, hdc in each st to end, join with sl st to first st. Be sure to have an odd number of stitches and the same number of stitches on either side of the V shape at front and back.
Round 2: Ch1, starting in same st, FPhdc, skip st in V shape, [FPhdc, BPhdc] until there is one st before next V, FPhdc in last st before V, [FPhdc, BPhdc] to end, join.
Round 3: Ch1, *FPhdc2tog (using the two stitches on either side of the V shape), [BPhdc, FPhdc]* to the stitch before the next V shape, repeat between * to end, join with sl st to first hdc. Fasten off.
Add fringe, tassels or other decorations if desired.
