Working in Front, Back or Third Loop
If you’ve ever been confused by instructions within a pattern to work in back loop, front loop only or even in the third loop you are not alone!
Typically we work crochet stitches at the top of the previous row or rounds stitch, in both loops at the same time, however, by varying where you work your stitches, you can vary the look of the fabric you create. Let’s take a look!
- Working in the back loop – this means you will make your stitches by inserting your hook in the back loop (one furthest away from you) of the previous row/round’s stitch, leaving the front loop free. This free loop creates a texture line in the finished fabric, which is a nice design element. That free loop can also be crocheted into for intricate looking color work or texture.
- Working in the front loop – this means you will make your stitches by inserting your hook in the front loop (one closest to you) of the previous row/round’s stitch, leaving the free loop in the back of the work. This makes the stitches appear to pop forward a bit with a slight valley between rows/rounds.
- Working in the third loop – this means you will make your stitches by inserting your hook in the third loop (one at the back of your work just below the back loop) of the previous row/round’s stitch, leaving the front and back loops facing forward. The free loops give a textured, knit look texture to the fabric.
Combine these loop techniques for a truly unique design!
