This is the sixth in the Slipper Of The Month series. You see a few years ago, I did an experiment. I designed a basic hat and named it the Chameleon Hat. Each month I modified it in keeping with the season or holiday for that month. It was a lot of fun and a very popular series, so the following year I ran a month event called the X Stitch Challenge, where I used the X stitch for a seasonal pattern each month. I thought it was time to bring back the monthly series and slippers seemed to be the perfect subject. So come back each month to see the slipper for that month and I hope you’ll join along too!

Boat Shoe Slippers
This month’s Slipper Of The Month is the Boat Shoe Slipper! I made samples in both Red Heart Super Saver Chunky and Red Heart Soft Essentials. I’ve also had success in using two strands held together of Red Heart Soft (yardage is based on the bulky yarn, you will need approximately double the yardage if you use two strands of worsted together). I loved the result with both yarns, just be sure to check gauge carefully with the double strands before you start. You can read my yarn reviews HERE!

The inspiration for this slipper came from my husband’s favorite shoes – a pair of brown Sperry Topsiders that he wears all summer long! He loves those shoes because they are comfortable, casual but not sloppy and easy to wear with pants, shorts or whatever the summer brings his way. So, I got to thinking maybe I should design a slipper with that same boat shoe look and styling.
These boat shoe slippers were intended as a Father’s Day gift, but I had to give them to him early so he could model them, and I’m happy to say he LOVES them! He now wears boat shoes all the time — the Sperry’s outdoors and his slippers indoors!
Well as my husband was modeling for my photo shoot, our daughter saw his new slippers and fell in love with the style. She asked me if I could make her a pair, but she wanted them in a funky color combination like a self striping or variegated yarn combined with a solid. Since I can’t seem to say no to special requests from my children, I looked in my stash and found a multi color (blues and greens) Red Heart Soft Essentials yarn that I paired with a dark grey of the same brand. I wasn’t sure how it would work out but now that they are done, I love the funky result. Normally I’m all about symmetry, but I find it oddly pleasing that the tops of these slippers are different, even though they are made with the same yarn, simply because of how the colors broke.
So whatever colors and yarn you choose, I hope you will give this loafer a try!
Since I designed these for both men and women, I sized them based on length in inches. The chart below can help you figure out what US shoe size that equates to but remember, the measurement in inches is always the best choice for a good fit.
Whether you make them for your favorite man or woman, I think you’ll be pleased with them!

Toe and Top:
Crochet the top of the slipper starting at the toe and join it to the Sole section by picking up stitches on the base at the end of each row, as you work toward the ankle section.
Before continuing with the next section, you will mark several stitches to help you with where to end increases and where to start the Heel section. You will increase one stitch each row up to the first stitch marker on either side of the center toe marker; you will continue with the same stitch count up to the second stitch marker on either side of the center toe marker.
Move stitch marker at center toe to current round. Mark the designated stitches to the right and left of center toe marker as follows (See Figure 1):
- Size 7.5”: Mark stitches 7 & 13

Make the tie in the contrasting color. There are several methods to make a tie including:
- Simply cut a length of yarn.
- Chain stitches to the proper length.
- Make a twisted rope.
- Make a chain then sl st in each chain.
- Other – your method of preference!
Once you have the tie in the proper length, weave it in and out at even intervals being sure that both ends come out at the flap from the inside to the outside. Tie in a bow or decorative knot or add tassels for a preppy look!
