Sonoma Sunburst Poncho
This pattern is part of the 2019 International Crochet Month Designer Showcase hosted by The Underground Crafter. I’m thrilled to be part of this fun event and celebrate our craft. Every day during the month of March a designer, who is also a member of the Crochet Guild of America (CGOA) will be featured and offer you either a free pattern or a discounted pattern. You will find all the details, including the list of designers, HERE.
So, let’s talk about CGOA for a bit. The CGOA is a volunteer run organization and the only one that is dedicated to crochet. I’ve been a member of CGOA for about 5 years. Membership comes with lots of perks – a subscription to Crochet! magazine, discounts at some of our favorite vendors such as Leisure Arts, Annies, and more, and access to lots of resources, but for me, of greatest value are the relationships! Not only is this group a fantastic conduit to industry connections on the business side of crochet, it is also a great place to develop and maintain rewarding personal relationships. For a long time I had forged friendships online with fellow designers and crochet buffs and it was so great to meet some of them at my first CGOA Conference. It was like meeting up with a penpal that you’d had for years! The Conferences are so much fun and offer wonderful opportunities to learn from industry leaders. I can’t wait until this summer’s conference….won’t you join us?

The Materials:
For this lacy, flouncy poncho, Red Heart provided me with one of my favorite yarns – Red Heart It’s A Wrap Rainbow. You can read my yarn reviews HERE, but let me tell you this yarn is spectacular! The colorways are brilliant and evolve so elegantly and the yarn, while a fine weight, doesn’t feel tiny and difficult to work with. This yarn is a home run!
I had an opportunity to try out a new crochet hook too! Thanks to the folks over at Laurel Hill, I tested their beautiful wooden hooks. These hooks are made from exotic repurposed woods and hand polished to a smooth finish so there is no snagging or drag on the yarn. I really appreciate this because I’m a pretty fast crocheter and I need my hooks to move with me! I also love the wide, flat thumb rest and the defined point on the hook makes it easy to find your stitch without snagging. Check out their lovely selection of hooks and other crafty products too!
Now let’s talk about the poncho. I love ponchos because they are a great fashion accessory. They look great with jeans, slacks, skirts, dresses or whatever you want to put together! For the spring, I decided to make a lacy version. It’s just a little extra layer for those breezy spring days. The stitch sequence is easy and a simple repeat. This sizing should fit most adults, but if you would like to make it bigger, simply repeat the sequence of filet and double crochet to add extra rounds. If you want to make it smaller, I guess you could eliminate some of the repeats too! I changed up the lace for a wide border to add more visual interest – I love mixing things up!
I hope you’ll give this poncho a try!
Size: Adult size fits most – 27” long at front and back points x 22” long at sides – easily adjusted for other sizing by adding or reducing the repeats.
Materials:
- Fine Weight (#2) yarn, I used Red Heart It’s A Wrap Rainbow – 2 balls (623 yards each) about ¼ left over
- Hook G/4.00 mm
- Hook H/5.00 mm

Ch1, *[hdc, dc, 3tr, dc, hdc] in ch2 space, sc in next ch1 space, [sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, tr in next st, ch3 (not too tightly), sl st in next ch1 space] repeat to last ch1 space*; repeat between * to end, join. Fasten off.
Neckline (optional): I finished off the neckline with one round of sc. This is optional but I like the look and feel that it gives the finished poncho more stability.
