Hat Pattern Instructions
Size: Toddler, Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium/Large
Materials:
Worsted Weight Yarn:
- Color 1:
- Toddler/Child ~ 150 – 170 yards
- Adult ~ 230 – 250 yards
- Color 2: ~50 yards
- Color 3: ~5 yards
Buttons/beads to decorate (optional)
Gauge: 12 FPdc x 8 rows = 3”
Abbreviations (US Terms):
BPdc = back post dc
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
FPdc = front post double crochet
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
To work a FPdc – Yarn over, insert hook from front to back and to front again around the vertical post of next st, yarn over and draw yarn through (3 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through two loops] two times.
To work a BPdc – Yarn over, insert hook from back to front and to back again around the vertical post of next st, yarn over and draw yarn through (3 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through two loops] two times.

Child – Fits 19” – 21” | 8” long | Adult Medium/Large – Fits 23” – 24” | 9” long |
Pattern is written for Toddler Size with Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium/Large in parentheses ( ).

Notes to help you with the chart and customization:
- With the exception of the first round, all rounds are worked as FPdc around the stitch in the round directly below.
- The graph design is worked in the center stitches of the hat only.
- Join each round with a sl st in the first FPdc (not ch2) of each round.
- Pay attention to color changes in graph. To complete clean color changes, work last stitch before new color until there are two loops on hook, pull in new color. You may work over yarn not in use and carry the yarn or snip at each color change and weave ends.
All Sizes:
Round 1 (Right Side): With Color 1, ch 66 (74, 80, 86) loosely, dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc) and remaining chs to end. Join with sl st to the 1st st to form the round. (64, 72, 78, 84 sts)
Rounds 2 and 3: Ch2 (does not count as a st throughout), [FPdc around next st, BPdc around next st], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (64, 72, 78, 84 sts)
Round 4: Ch2, FPdc around each st to end, join. (64, 72, 78, 84 sts)
Rounds 5 to 14 (Graph Rounds): Ch2, FPdc around 12 (16, 19, 22) sts, work graph round paying attention to color changes, FPdc around last 11 (15, 18, 21) sts, join. (64, 72, 78, 84 sts)
Round 15: Continue with Color 1, ch2, FPdc around each st to end, join. (64, 72, 78, 84 sts)
Continue with instructions for desired size.
For Toddler and Child:
Round 16: Ch2, [FPdc around 6 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (56, 64 sts)
Round 17: Ch2, FPdc around each st to end, join. (56, 64 sts)
Round 18: Ch2, [FPdc around 5 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (48, 56 sts)
Round 19: Ch2, FPdc around each st to end, join. (48, 56 sts)
Round 20: Ch2, [FPdc around 4 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (40, 48 sts)
Round 21: Ch2, [FPdc around 3 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (32, 40 sts)
Round 22: Ch2, [FPdc around 2 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (24, 32 sts)
Round 23: Ch2, FPdc2tog to end, join. (12, 16 sts)
For Toddler size, fasten off leaving a 9” tail and skip to “Finishing”.
Round 24 (Child Size Only): Ch2, FPdc2tog to end, join. Fasten off and leave a 9” tail to close crown. (8 sts)
For child size, fasten off leaving a 9” tail and skip to “Finishing”.
For Adult Small & Adult Medium/Large
Rounds 16 & 17: Repeat Round 15. (78, 84 sts)
Round 18:
For Adult Small Only: Ch2, [FPdc around 11 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (72 sts)
For Adult Medium/Large Only: Ch2, [FPdc around 5 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (72 sts)
Round 19: Ch2, [FPdc around 7 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (64, sts)
Round 20: Ch2, FPdc around each st to end, join. (64 sts)
Round 21: Ch2, [FPdc around 6 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (56 sts)
Round 22: Ch2, FPdc around each st to end, join. (56 sts)
Round 23: Ch2, [FPdc around 5 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (48 sts)
Round 24: Ch2, [FPdc around 4 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (40 sts)
Round 25: Ch2, [FPdc around 3 sts, FPdc2tog], repeat between [ ] to end, join. (32 sts)
Round 26: Ch2, FPdc2tog to end, join. (16 sts)
Round 27: Ch2, FPdc2tog to end, join. Fasten off and leave a 9” tail to close crown. (8 sts)
Finishing: Thread tapestry needle, working from inside of hat, weave in and out of the stitches in the last round, pull tightly to close opening at crown. Weave ends in securely.
Decorate with beads and buttons if desired.
Add pompom if desired.
