Pin The Modified Single Crochet Tutorial For Later!
Modified Single Crochet in Back Loop
I love texture and am always in pursuit of new stitch combinations that provide fun texture. I was playing around with a few single crochet stitch combinations the other day and stumbled upon this simple, yet effective look. Now I’m sure there must be a name for this stitch (because nothing is every really new) but I couldn’t find it, so I’m calling it a Modified Single Crochet!
Well, what’s the modification you ask? Well, it’s quite simple. Instead of working a single crochet in the normal way, where you insert the hook, yarn over and pull a loop through, yarn over again and finish the stitch, with the modified version you yarn “under” instead of “over”. That’s it really!
Well, I did work it in the back loop only (BLO), so it has the pretty little ridges too. I have a simple video tutorial on working stitches into different loops HERE.
What do I like about the modified single crochet in BLO stitch? Well I like the dense, fabric it creates and the yarn “under” makes the single crochet stand up a little straighter and the the yarn has a more vertical appearance, so that combined with the back loop feature, it almost appears woven.
Where would I use the modified single crochet in BLO stitch? I think this stitch could work for almost any project, but right now I’ve only tested it working in the round, so I’m thinking hats, cowls, totes and such. I plan to play around so that I can get it to work in rows too and I think it would be great for placemats, blankets and maybe cardigans. Of course, you could experiment with yarn and hook size for many more looks too! Have fun!
