The Cushy Rug is a great way to add a bit of color, warmth and softness to your home! This rug is so easy and works up so quickly in the bulky yarn, that you will want to make several! I love these little mats for the bathroom, side of a bed, entrance or even as a soft hang out space for the cat!
I worked the entire rug in the round with a simple half double crochet stitch so this would be a great beginner project to learn how to crochet in the round.
The Cushy Rug is another of my “recipe” patterns. That means that while I provide the instructions for the rug, it is really more of a guideline that you can adapt to your needs. If you want to make this rug smaller, simply stop the rounds at whatever point you like and add the edging. If you want to make it larger, follow the repeat sequence until it is as large as you like.
Tips: If you make the Cushy Rug larger and it starts to turn into more of an octagon rather than a circle, you can scatter your increases instead of doing them inline. If you find the rug is getting too “frilly” or wavy around the edges, do a round of hdc in each stitch sooner rather than at round 10.
I used Bernat Blanket yarn and a large hook to make this Cushy Rug and I love how thick and soft it is.
I chose a variegated yarn which does all the work!

I’m onto row 7 and the rug is not laying flat. It’s curling up. What can I do to flatten it out?
PatternParadise says
I’m not sure. I did not have that issue. Try stretching it as you go and blocking at the end.
Connie says
What size is the rug pictured above and how much yarn was used? Having this information would be useful in formulating how much yarn I need for the size I want to make.
PatternParadise says
The rug is approximately 30″ in diameter. I don’t recall how much yarn I used.
Pat says
Thank you for the free pattern! Only question I have is… In **repeat row 9 eight times, increasing the number in red by 1… I don’t see anything in red? What does this mean? Thanks Pat
PatternParadise says
Oops! The “red” is there now. What it means is that you increase the number of stitches between where you work 2hdc in the same stitch, by one for each repeat. I think once you see the highlighted numbers in RED it will become clearer.
Ramona says
I think the red number she is referring to is what is depicted in the first round 9. The number 7 was in red,, in the first repeat of round 9 (which is round 10) she increases the number of hdc to 8, so the next round would be increased to
9 and so on until desired size is reached
