I can’t believe we are at the end of this year’s #12WeeksChrismasCAL already! I hope you’ve enjoyed this year’s projects. Thank you to my wonderful co-hosts for their talented designs and kindness in sharing. Thank you to Yarnspirations for their continued support and for providing all of the fantastic prizes for the giveaways! Enjoy this week’s pattern!
The Jolly Fun Socks came together in a funny way! I wanted to make a pair of fun holiday socks, but frankly, nothing I was envisioning was looking right once stitched. Then I took a trip to Florida and was sharing my plight with my friend’s daughter — suddenly, we started sharing ideas and the socks came together! I quickly sketched the design and then later that night stitched it up. I loved it!
These are intended to be worn as socks, perhaps with boots, but of course could be worn as slippers too. They are fitted, comfy and from what my friend’s daughter tells me (she was my model) they are quite warm.
If you’ve never made socks, don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than it looks. These are worked from the toe up so you can try them on your foot and customize the Jolly Fun Socks as you go. If you are making them for someone else, no worries, I’ve provided 4 size ranges which should have you covered. And, I give you the process step by step so you can customize as needed.
So pick your favorite colors and yarn and make some Jolly Fun Socks today!
Thank you to Yarnspirations for providing the yarn for this sample of the Jolly Fun Socks. I used Patons Astra #3 weight yarn, 161 yards per ball, in three colors: Cardinal, Emerald and White!

Pattern written for Kids size with changes as follows (Youth/Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large)
Kids (3 – 5 Yrs) | Youth/ Adult Small | Adult Medium | Adult Large | |
Foot – Circumference | 6″ | 7″ | 8″ | 9″ |
Foot – Length | 6 – 7.5″ | 7.5 – 9″ | 9 – 10″ | 10 – 11″ |
Calf – Circumference | 8″ | 10″ | 13″ | 15″ |
Length – Heel to Top | 9” | 13” | 15” | 15” |
These socks are worked from the toe up. I’ve provided average measurements for 4 sizes, however, they are easy to customize by following the basic process below.
- Work the toe until it is large enough to go around the arch of your foot.
- Change to the next color and work in pattern until the sock reaches the beginning of your heel.
- Work half the stitches in sc, then ch the other half and join to the first one. This leaves an opening where you will work the heel later on.
- Continue to work the sock in pattern to the ankle.
- Increase two stitches at the ankle (be sure to have a multiple of 4 at this point).
- Work the two-row repeat for the leg, changing hook size about 1/3 of the way up (measured from heel).
- Work one round of increases, change to largest hook size and continue two-row repeat until you are about 2” short of finished length.
- Work one round of decreases.
- Work Cuff.
Feel free to add increases or decreases as necessary to achieve the perfect fit.
Reminders:
- Work sock in the smallest hook size until otherwise noted in the leg.
- Fasten off at color changes unless otherwise noted.
- Work in both loops unless otherwise noted.
- To keep your work neat, be sure to make the joins in the exact same place each time. This will create a seam that will be worn facing the inside part of the foot, this is why the instructions FOOT instructions are different for right and left foot.
