Most commonly referred to as the block stitch, but sometimes also called the mosaic stitch or dot stitch, this square features accent colored single crochet stitches that provide interest and little pops of color in between rounds of the classic granny stitch.
After blocking, the finished square measures 6 inches x 6 inches, however, this project can be made larger or turned into an afghan by continuing the pattern repeats.
Skill Level:Â Easy
Supplies:
- Worsted weight yarn in two or more colors; I have used Knit Picks Shine Cotton Blend
- 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
- yarn needle for weaving in ends
Gauge in SC:Â 14 sts and 16 rows = 4″ (10 cm)
Abbreviations:Â ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, st(s) = stitch(es), sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet
Special Instructions:
- The beginning chain counts as the first stitch of the round
- Each round is joined by slip stitching in the top of the beginning chain
- Fasten off after each round and join the new color in the corner chain-2 or chain-3 space of the previous round
- The square is worked in joined rounds; do not turn your work

Where can I get a print friendly version of this pattern? I would love to try it but often my crochet time is spent in dance waiting rooms, doctor’s offices, and waiting in the school pick up line. I don’t have easy access to your webpage from those locations.
