How to Make Crisp Stripes in the Round
No “Step” or “Jog”
If you’ve ever worked stripes in the round, you know it can be difficult to get the color changes and joins to look smooth; and if you’ve tried it in tapestry crochet worked in the back loop only, it’s even more difficult to get a good result.
There are several common ways to work in the round:
- Working in a spiral – this means you don’t join the rounds, you simply continue to work in each consecutive stitch which creates a spiral effect. Working color changes in this way causes a step up or “jog” where the old color ends and the new one begins.
- Working in joined rounds – this means you join each round, usually with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round. Working color changes in this way usually causes a bump right at the join.
So are we doomed to live with these imperfections in our treasured handiwork? No!
This tutorial will show you how to make crisp joins and color changes without cutting the yarn, making an invisible join and subsequently have tons of ends to weave in! The bonus is that when working in the back loop only, as in typical tapestry crochet, this technique preserves the ridge formed by working in the back loop and the join is almost invisible.
