It’s no secret to those who know me, that Christmas time is my favorite time of year. I just love the feeling of it all, the decorated shop windows, the scent of seasonal foods cooking, the added emphasis on family and friends getting together….well I could go on, but you get the idea. Along with all the traditions I follow, every year I try to add something new to my home decorations for a touch of new inspiration and freshness. This year, it is a tree skirt!
When I set out to make this tree skirt, I wanted something that was easy and fun to make, in non-traditional colors, but with a touch of “bling”. I settled on a traditional granny stitch, with a star shape. While the star shape may look like other skirts you’ve seen, the construction is a bit different. It is not done in the more common chevron technique but rather with a simple combination of stitch sizes and a couple of simple decreases and increases.
For color inspiration I looked around the house and found a favorite bowl. I love the colors and design of this bowl. It reminds me of a peacock’s feathers and the radiating design along with the blues, greens and touches of gold are soothing to me somehow.
For the bling, I decided to add jeweled tassels with a bit of shine and dazzle. Of course, I may tire of these, so I simply put them on a lobster claw so they are easily removed or added as the mood strikes.
In addition to the yarn, you will need a few more things to make these tassels, if you want to see what i used, below is a photo and links to the supplies. You can also follow my easy video for making a tassel, here!

Pattern Instructions
- Written in US Standard terms.
- Weave ends as you work.
- Stitch count is in ( ) at the end of the Round.
The tree skirt is worked in the round as a pentagon (5 sides) with 5 “corners”. Join rounds with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round.
Groups of 3dc or 3tr or 4tr in the same st are referred to as a cluster for purposes of stitch counts.
The sizing may be adjusted by adding/deleting round repeats, keeping the increase patterns consistent, you’ll see what I mean as you work it.
Round 1: Ch45, join with sl st to first ch to form a circle, ch5 (counts as dc + ch2), dc in same st, dc next 8 chs, *VSt in next ch, dc next 8 chs*, repeat between [ ] to end, join to top of first st. (50)

Maria, this is beautiful. It looks like it doesn’t have an opening like most tree skirts. I guess you put it over the holder before putting the tree trunk in, right? I may have to make one this coming year for nest Christmas
PatternParadise says
Thank you and you are correct, you insert the trunk into the opening before you put it in the holder. I find this gives a neater skirt frame 🙂
