Birthday Pin Cushion
Today is my birthday and I wanted some cake, so I made this little cutie!
Do you find yourself searching for needles, pins and stitch markers while in the middle of a project? This generously sized cushion will get you organized, and keep everything within easy reach. And, it’s an added bonus that it looks like a birthday cake, complete with a lit birthday candle! It’s a sweet layered cake with fluffy pink icing and won’t add an inch to your waistline — what could be better? Enjoy!
I designed this pin chushion in #4 cotton worsted yarn, such as Lily Sugar n Cream, Red Heart Creme de la Creme or Premier Home Cotton. It works up very quickly and can be made in as many colors as you like — great for using up scraps of yarn!

Pattern Instructions
Cake – make 2:
Fasten off at color color changes.
Row 1: With Color 1, ch12, sc in 2nd ch from hook, and each remaining ch. (11 sc)
Row 2: Ch1, turn, sc in each st to end. (11 sc)
Rows 3 to 6: Repeat Row 2.
Row 7: Join Color 2, ch1, turn, sc in first st, [tr in next st, sc in next st], repeat to end. (5 bobbles, 11 sts total)
Rows 8 to 13: Repeat Row 2.
Row 14: Repeat Row 7. Fasten off.
Joining:
Note: You will sc around the entire perimeter to join the two pieces. In order to have continuous icing on the cake, I used the ivory color to join the sides and bottom and changed to the pink for the top.
With wrong sides together, match the stitches on the two cakes. Starting at the bottom right corner of the cake, join Color 1, ch1, working through both pieces, sc in each st to last st before icing. Change to Color 2, 2sc in corner, sc next 3 sts, ch1 loosely, skip 1 (this will be where you insert the candle), sc next 3 sts, 2sc in corner. Change to Color 1, continue to sc in each st to bottom left corner of cake, 2sc in corner.
At this point, stuff the pin cushion with the Poly-fil and continue to sc closed to next corner, join to first st. Fasten off.
Candle:
Row 1: With candle color, ch11, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end. (10 sl sts)
Row 2: Turn, sl st in each st to end. (10 sl sts)
Rows 3 to 7: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off after last repeat leaving a 7” tail.
Closing Candle: To make the “flame”, cut the 2 strands of yellow and orange in half, take the 4 pieces of yarn and fold them in half. Place in center of “candle” as shown. Using yarn needle and 7” tail, whip stitch the candle closed encasing the “flame” in the center.
Slide the candle in the center of the cake (skipped sc from join) and tack in place.
