The Bobble Stitch is a fun stitch that adds texture and interest to any crochet project. It’s similar in look to the Popcorn Stitch but I find it easier since it is done without removing and re-inserting the hook. Bobbles can be done in different multiples of stitches, but I think the most common are either 4 or 5 stitch Bobbles. The number of stitches in the Bobble will determine how big the ball is. You can see this illustrated in the sample below:
So let’s get started.
Start with your base row. This can be anything, single crochet, double crochet and more. I used double crochet for my sample.
The Bobble Stitch is worked from the wrong side of the fabric. Single crochet to the stitch before the Bobble.
In the designated stitch, start off as if you were making a double crochet, but don’t complete the last pull through – leave two loops on the hook (one from the last single crochet, the other from the first stitch of the Bobble).
Repeat the same process as many times as necessary for the size Bobble you are making (two, three, four, five stitch, etc.). In my example I’m making a 4 double crochet Bobble, so I repeated the process 3 times. You have one loop on the hook for each stitch plus your starting loop from the last single crochet leading up to the Bobble.
Yarn over and pull through all lops at once to close the Bobble.
From the back, the Bobble Stitch looks like a slight indent.
From the front, the Bobble will pop out like a little ball.
When you work the next row, you will work in the top of the Bobble Stitch as if you were working into any other stitch.
That’s it, it’s that simple! I hope you’ve enjoyed learning this stitch and will find many ways to use it in your projects! Here’s a free pattern that uses this stitch so you can practice======> Bobble Kerchief
