There is no shortage of handmade gifts for Mother’s Day, but I wanted something a little different from the usual flowers or trinkets. I designed this very simple and quick set that can be easily customized, is eco friendly and a fantastic stash buster.
This is really more of a “recipe” than a pattern. I’ve written basic instructions for round and square containers that you can easily adjust for your specific container. You can use any container you wish, just make sure it is clean and you’ve sealed off any rough edges. I’ve used everything from votive candle holders to plastic milk containers.
Of course, you can add a flower or other decorative touches to make your projects really personal and special.
This pattern has so many uses and can be made in so many sizes, you will find yourself whipping up many many different projects ….. here are some ideas:
Storage containers, plant hangers, jewelry cases, desk sets, etc…….
These container covers would make great teacher gifts too!

Here goes the recipe:
Square Base:
Round 1: Make a Magic Circle, ch2, work 12 dc in circle. Pull tail to close loop.
Round 2: Ch3, 2dc in each st around. (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch3, 2dc in same st, [dc next 5 sts, 3dc in next st (corner made)] 3 times, dc in last 5 sts. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. (32 dc)
Round 4: Ch3, 2dc in same st (corner made), [dc to next corner st, 3dc in corner st] 3 times, dc remaining sts. Join with sl st to top of beg ch3. (40)
Repeat Round 4 until base measures desired size. Continue with instructions for Sides.
Round Base:
Round 1: Make a Magic Circle, ch2, work 10 dc in circle. Pull tail to close loop.
Round 2: Ch3, 2dc in each st around. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch3, [dc in next st, 2dc in next st] repeat to end. Join with sl st to beg ch3. (30 dc)
Round 4: Ch3, dc in next st, [dc in next 2 st, 2dc in next st] repeat to end. Join with sl st to beg ch3. (40 dc)
Round 5: Ch3, dc in next 2 sts, [dc in next 3 st, 2dc in next st] repeat to end. Join with sl st to beg ch3. (50 dc)
Repeat Round 5 increasing the highlighted numbers by 1 for each row, until base measures desired size. Continue with instructions for Sides.
Sides:
Sides are worked in dc, if you prefer a tighter fabric, work in hdc instead of dc.
Round 1: Ch1, working in back loops only, sc in each st around. Join with sl st to beg sc.
Round 2: Ch4 (counts as dc and ch1), [skip 1, (dc, ch1, dc) in next st], repeat around to last st, skip last st. join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch4.
Round 3: sl st into ch1 space, ch4 (counts as dc and ch1), [dc, ch1, dc)] in each ch1 space to end. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch4.
Repeat Round 3 until desired height.
Border:
Round 1: Ch1, sc in same st and each st around.
Round 2: Ch1, [FPhdc, BPhdc] around to end. Join with sl st to beg FPhdc. Fasten off.
Note this last round will create a stretchy band so that the cover fits your container and does not slip off. It should go slightly above the top of your container.
Flower:
Make a Magic Circle, ch1 [hdc, dc, 2tr, dc, hdc] 5 times, join with sl st to beg hdc. Fasten off. Pull tail in center of flower to close hole. If desired, sew a button or pearl to center.
Hanging Flower Container:
To convert into a hanging flower container, simply add hanging straps. You will need a metal “O” ring or some other connector to join the straps at top.
Separate the top of the container into 3 even sections and mark each point. With two or three strands together (depending upon desired thickness and weight of plant), join yarn around the “O” ring, ch to desired length and fasten off leaving a long enough strand to connect to container. Repeat two more times.
Take long strands and fasten to points at top of container.
Insert plant in container and hand from ring.
