When designing my first bonnet pattern, trying to determine standard sizing for a bonnet wasn’t an easy task. I searched for quite a while trying to find some sort of chart or site with a complete list of measurements, but found that hat retailers and designers all size them differently. That’s when I set out to come up with my own size chart.
Basically, what I ended up doing was to follow the same increase instructions that I would use for a hat, but after the last increase round start working back and forth in rows. On the baby sized hats, I ended the first row when there were 4 stitches remaining and turned my work. For toddler and child sizes, I left 6 stitches unworked, and on the adult sizes, 8 stitches were left. Most bonnet patterns don’t usually have adult sizes, but I thought I would include them anyways.
The measurements listed below are for the rounded back style of bonnet and the sides of the bonnet should rest just below the jawline. If making a pixie style bonnet, you may want to increase the height by approximately 1 inch.

Thank you very much. I have been trying to find a chart for a bonnet for a newborn. After endless searches I found yours. There are lots of patterns out there, but none that said YES to me, so I have been making my own. Again, thank you. You have helped me tremendously.
