Rosary Hill Blanket CAL
Crochet a beautiful blanket for yourself and give back to those less fortunate by donating a square or two to the Rosary Hill Blanket Charity Project!
The Rosary Hill Blanket CAL: A labor of love, sparked by the kindness and compassion of a very special woman and her sister. Let me explain. About 20 years ago, I met a woman at my hairdresser. I didn’t know her name, but our paths always seemed to cross when I would venture in for my monthly cut and color. Even though the hairdresser moved shops a couple of times, it seemed that I would still run into this woman regularly. Over time I learned her name was Josephine. We didn’t talk much but I listened and observed and what I learned was that Josephine was (and is) a very kind, compassionate and caring woman who always goes the extra step for friends, family and even the random stranger. So it was no surprise to me, when I learned a few months ago, that Josephine and her sister Grace had embarked on a labor of love, crochet project for charity. Last Holiday Season, the nuns at the Rosary Hill Hospice had hoped and prayed for new blankets to bring a little extra warmth and love to their patients during that magical time of year. Their prayers were answered by these two lovely women, who crocheted blankets in a holiday color scheme and delivered them to the hospice in time for Christmas 2015. The nuns and patients were so appreciative that it triggered an idea for Josephine and Grace… how could they complete enough blankets to cover all the beds (30 in all) in the hospice by Christmas 2016?
This is where I came in. One Saturday morning, I happened to hear Josephine sharing this story with our hairdresser. Inspiration struck. Why not make this a crochet community charity project? Thus the Rosary Hill Blanket CAL was born! The nuns chose the color scheme, I designed the squares and we can all help in achieving the goal!
Here’s how it will work:
The Free CAL Part:
- The CAL will run over a 4 week period starting 6/3/2016.
- Click HERE to join the Rosary Hill CAL Facebook Event to be sure and get all the details and news on the CAL.
- The first 3 Fridays, 6/3, 6/10 and 6/17, I will release a new free pattern for a 12″ afghan square.
- The 4th week, 6/24, will be a lesson in how to join the squares and add the border.
The Giving Part:
- The pattern is yours to keep with no obligation, of course, but in the spirit of giving I ask that you consider making 2 squares and donating them to the Rosary Hill Blanket Project.
- If you participate in the donation, you will automatically be entered into a Grand Prize Giveaway, which will include yarn from our generous sponsor Red Heart Yarns and a mystery goodie!
Donating Squares:
Each blanket uses 12 white squares and 6 each of the green and wine. Because the nuns would like the blankets to be uniform, all squares must be made using Red Heart Soft yarn in the colorway for that week’s square ( Week 1= white; Week 2=wine; Week 3= dark leaf). One skein of yarn will make two squares but feel free to make as many as you like!
Mail the squares to the designated address (available in the Facebook Event), to be received no later than July 15th to qualify for the Grand Prize Drawing, but of course, you are welcome to continue to donate squares after that too.
The squares will be assembled and lovingly joined, and bordered by Josephine, her sister and a small team of “angels” who have volunteered to help out and the blankets will be delivered to the hospice in time for the 2016 Christmas season.
Thank you for reading through and I hope you will join the CAL and share your talents with those less fortunate and join us for the charity project too! Be sure to share this post with your other crafty friends so they may enjoy the CAL too!

I would love to help, and send more squares so they have extra blankets, but I am not on Facebook. I only see the pattern for the white square and the green, but not the red. Does someone know where I can get it, other than Facebook? If there are already enough blankets for Rosary Hill, there is a Catholic hospice in my town that I’m sure would love these. I have a group of crocheters who would love to make these blankets, including in red, white and blue for our local veterans home. Is there somewhere I can get instructions for square #2/. It would be the red square. My email is [email protected]. I see instructions for #1-white, #3-green and #4-assembly. Thanks to any who can help! God Bless you!

Thank you so much. I think for now we have enough for the Rosary Hill Hospice but I’d be delighted if you used my pattern for other charity projects. And feel free to send me a note with your activity so I may share on my website and FB page. The red square is on my website too. You can find all of my free patterns in the menu under “FREE PATTERNS”. Here is the link to the red one for your convenience. https://pattern-paradise.com/2016/06/09/rosary-hill-blanket-cal-week-2-afghan-square/

I see we need to use Red Heart ‘Soft’ yarn! I went to JoAnn’s website and they have the wine and white, no straight green! Different colors with different names! I’m wondering if I’m jumping the gun by looking to purchase and I don’t know the correct green! Can you help me with this?

I’ve updated the post, the correct names are white, wine and dark leaf. Thank you for your interest, I’m so excited to get started!
